Does anybody know what size hole is in the jet in the cold start kit for the 250sx/250es? I am thinking of drilling mine out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I posted this in the classifieds also. Found it in the search engine
Well the "cold start kit" can be bought at a honda dealer if they still have them, as now the part is discontinued. The Honda dealer part # is 06161-HA0-305.
There is a good write up on .ORG as I didnt find it on here >>

I was also told by others that Drill the starter jet out to .080 and it will start in zero degrees..... Take the bowl off and it's on top and pressed in. Just make sure to get all the crap out after drilling, put grease on the drill bit.
You could also find you a carb from an 86-87 250ES big red or 250SX or 85-86 350X and it would take care of that cold start issue.

I found a nos honda cold start kit on ebay. It has arrived. It is a bag of various fuel lines and hardware. I have no idea how to install the fix. None of the links are valid in this installost. I have an 85 big red 250 that I would like to use for ice fishing. I have used it before but any kind of chill in the air causes a lot of wear and tear on the starter and I would like to minimize that. Anyone have info on the cold start kit install?

All the 85 ES and SX carbs I've rebuilt, I drill the startup jet with a .80mm micro-drill. That's metric not SAE. Its a tiny drill I chuck up in my Dremmel. I have had a few carbs come across my bench that had the "kit" jets in them and they do look different than the stock jet. Here's my tutorial on rebuilding the ES/SX carbs and post 3 talks about the cold start mod and how to get your startup jet out.

I had a 85 sx with the cold start trouble. Got word of the kits, tracked one down - paid 80 for it- and looked it over. I guess all the hoses are to ensure the gas stay fresh...I don't remeber how it all works but it's a rats nest of hoses. The most important part is the new jet that you install. Rather than ruin a kit, I indexed it - drilled out my stocker and problem solved...and I don't need all those ugly hoses!

When I get an 86 carb in for rebuild and it has that spaghetti mess of vent hoses, that's the first thing to get tossed. For the life of me I can't figure out why Honda did that. It brings in both vents in to one vent hose and if that one vent hose gets blocked by mud or whatever, the fuel doesn't flow. The vents are there because you have to have air above liquid for positive flow. I configure my carbs with two simple independent vent hoses.

Hmm good info, thanks. I maybe shouldn't have jumped the gun. Saw it on ebay and knew they were tough to get. Dam buy it now button.

Yeah, the hoses don't seem to do sh!t. Get an Keihin 08 carb or drill the starter jet and make certain to get all the crap out. Probably thru the pilot or air screw with compressed air....

The kit should come with a replacement jet. I just put one together couple days ago, and its kind of a jigsaw puzzle but by using pics from the Internet and the service manual you can figure it out. Still not sure how much good the hoses do but for an 86 or 87 its supposed to have them to be "original" which is the way I want it.

The jet install is easy but would be just as easy to just ream out the existing one I would think. Mine being an 86 I did not need the jet. I just had to find something to plug the hole with as the Original rubber plug was disintegrating. I almost soldered the jet shut and press that in for a plug. Kinda glad I didn't as I just found another 85 today for reasonable price so might need it.

If you need I could try to measure the oriface of the replacement jet.
