View Full Version : The FASTEST 86/87 200X I've ever ridden.....

Well, I'm at about 75% of total jetting - meaning starter, pilot, needle and main. You can't expect any jetting specs to work when you have a bored, ported, cam'd, lightened flywheel and a 28 Mikuni flatslide.

It's a reminder to me that when people ask "where should I start with my jetting" that it's a nearly impossible question to answer at best. I am so far from what "I" had originally thought the jetting should be that it's

Anyhow, I've been tinkering with the jetting on the 28MM flatslide Mikuni and I'm at about a 280 main and it's taking it all with race gas. I know it will beat my 86 350X and that motor is a strong runner, jetted with an HRC tipped 450R can and an open lid.... The 200X does seem to stumble down mid just a bit, about 1/3 throttle so I must need to raise or lower the needle or change it altogether.

The stock pilot was a 15 and I'm up to a 30 which is STILL too lean!

All I can say is that this thing is the fastest 4 stroke I've ever ridden. It sounds allot like a 250F motor as it loves to rev to the moon..... I honestly don't even know what cam it has because it was an EBAY deal with no information.

NINJA had a fast as all hell 86/87 200X. So built that his rocker box had to be ground to clear the arms :naughty: I can only imagine what a stroker kit and the most aggressive cam could do for these machines :D

SEADOO has an unbelievably smokin fast 85 200X and I'm sure he can attest to what these small displacement powerplants are capable of but I'm just beyond satisfied after the ride I just took. It feels like I'm on a combination of a 350X and a 250R all in one.... (maybe not THAT fast!!)

I'm getting a camcorder for XMAS, thats about the soonest I can post up some sounds and footage but I am very very pleased to say the least :D

Faster than a 350X? Wow. I've heard almost nothing but great things about the 86/87 200X. I can't wait to ride mine with a good clutch which will hopefully be Monday or Tuesday.

Very cool! How reliable do you think this X is DC? (thats not a dig, its pure interest)

Someone needs to get on the 250F swap into an R or X.

Nice man, thats freakin cool, and inspiring.

Excited to see some vids. you should work on gettin a race between your 350x, and the 200.

Gonna get me a 200x one of these days, when funds will allow.

Hey BGM, I think being that it isn't a "stroker" it's reliable. But I will say "fairly" reliable.... Only because it's a used crank and I worry about the big end bearing as it's 22 years old.... I do wish I could have done the lower bearing due to the 12:1 piston in there.......

I have to talk to Mark (garage boy), I think he can get somne cranks done for me. There aren't all the parts for the 86/87 connecting rod, thats the problem..... I think you can get either the rod or the bearing or the thrust washers (obviously I have no positive information and don't know what I'm talking about  ) but in a nutshell, some of it is available and some is not. Garage boy is the person that sold me the White Bros Mikuni 28MM flatslide that really opened up the potential of this machine.... (Thank you Mark!! :D) Unfortunately, this motor had NOTHING at Trikefest, now that I see what it can do back here in Massachusetts :beer

Anyhow, it's normal stuff for us diehard trikers to have 50% of the OEM parts available and then we have to machine others to fit :D

Regardless, thats the only reliability issue I think of. Doesn't matter to me though, I have about 6 or so of these motors so I can expirement all I want.

I think this one will last awhile, but 12:1 really beats the lower bearing so I need to get a couple of good cranks and of course - a stroker crank for the next motor,

The nice thing about a built 4 poke is that it doesn't have that "lightswitch" powerband but it still makes awesome manageable power. I like approaching jumps with confidence, not with an increase in 5 HP as soon as I crest the jump

Hey DC, I still have the bottom end that your top end came off of. It is supposed to have a powroll stroker crank. How can I tell? measurments? I'd be willing to part with it. I may split the cases and keep the trans gears and stator for my 86, but the rest could go.

Hopefully this summer you will ride the fastest Tri-z you have ever been on.

Ya, these little four poppers can rock out if ya got the patience. How much coin ya got in the motor so far?

My buddy used to have a 200X that would run with my 350X. I remember at night you could see about 6 inches of header pipe glowing cherry red. It was fast, But it blew up after a few months

nice to hear dc. i love the 200x's. my 85 seemed to be faster then my 86, i dont know maybe it was just me. i have a complete 85 roller that the frame and suspension is great on, but no motor, and plastics are beat, sitting behind my garage. once i get my t3's done, and most of my other projects around my garage and house done, then i am going to be bringing that into the garage and making my dream 200x. and hopefully it to will be able to hang with the 350x's.

Hey bud, glad you found your way to my 200X thread :D It's running well but I expect even more. I could take a measurement at TDC from the where the cylinder would normally bolt. Just by using a straight edge and a ruler. If it's a 4 or 6 mil stroker, then we'll see about a 3/16th to 1/4 inch difference. I don't think I have to go so far as "thousandths of an inch"....

But obviously I'LL TAKE IT!! I didn't realize you had it. I thought you had tossed on another topend and still had it running....

Really though, send me a PM with your contact information please - I have 4 or so bottom ends complete and together and could also powdercoat one for you and work something out......

I'm not in it too bad...

12:1 piston was 120$
Bore job 75$
Cam and ported head were a great deal on EBAY, I think about 150$??
New rockers and valves about 100$ or so.
Used Mikuni flatslide with WhiteBros mods 100$
New Mikuni flatslide no mods, needs mods 120$
Timing chain, gears etc about 100$
OEM oil pump 40$
Barnett clutch kit 70$
Vesrah kit 60$
87 kicker 87$
87 lower end EBAY 100$ (near free after Paypal dispute)

Then there's the rest......

Supertrapp about 250$
Uni 20$
PRM 35$
Fork boots 50$
Fork seals etc 100$
Pro Tapers and adapters 120$
Tires and wheels 400$
OEM seat 200$

Pretty much all the rest was restored from crap I had or won on EBAY. I was always saving the best parts for the best 200X I could build......

All powder coating was basically free and or cheapy cheap - THANKS JEFF!! and for getting me the Supertrapp too :D

I'm sure I missed some cables and stuff too, and plenty of grommets and bushings etc etc.... Plus TONS of blood sweat and tears. I the end, very welll worth it, it's a ver tight trike and running stronger every day. I'm just gonna keep modding and dumping money into this 200X :D

Maybe it was more expensive than I thought  :beer

My 86 is together and running fine, It has a stock 87 engine in it now...it may get a mild cam in the future, but I'm building my 85 engine first. As much as I like the 86, it is just really short on leg room for me, my 85 is a little roomier and at 6'3" I need it.-------Could you give me the length of the stock 86/87 rod and I will compare it to the crank in the bottom end I have.

Here we go:

OK - From the top of the deck (where the cylinder would mount with no gasket) to the the tallest point of the stroke to the CENTER of the wrist pin - I have about 1 - 15/32.

From that same point to the lowest stroke, I have about 7/16 of an inch to the center of the wrist pin.

Thats 1.9375 plus .4375 or 2.375 total stroke which in metric conversions is about a 60MM total stroke. The Service manual confirms that a 60MM stroke is stock. Of course I'd normally use a dial indicator and all that good stuff but it's cold outside, I did it quick but it seems to be pretty accurate.....

Did your cylinder have a spacer plate under it?? Does the rod about mid way up look to have had allot of heat put to it (shrunken rod technology)??

I'd imagine there is something you could see there or remember??

I used 6" machinist rulers and used the 1/32 side to get these dimensions quick. Let me know what you come up with, no hurry......

Thanks again for the original ported head and cam, they work very very well :D

Take care,
Steve

I'm sure it's near 4000$ bucks with everything there. And thats without plastic etc etc.... I'm not a cosmetics guy.

I've ALWAYS said that no matter what you buy, it ends up being a 2500$ ATC or much greater than that.

If it's what YOU want, then the price means nothing. I'm honestly less of a "that looks awesome man!!" guy than I am a person that wants power, performance and a reliable tight machine I can count on.

I'm certain I dropped 10K on ATC's and parts last year and id doesn't bother me the least :D

It adds up real fast when your expirementing and buying anything and everything you see for future projects.

The 250F/ 86 250R machine I WILL BUILD, I'm certain will be a 6K machine or better :naughty:

As long as the bills are paid, I'm content..........

dirt, don't feel bad, I've dropped 6500 in the last year...and I make maybe a tenth of what you do.

DC how did you get an oil pump so cheap? I got one for my '84 with my brother's Honda dealer discount and it was still $66. They charge $120 for it retail lol.

Edit: Nevermind I see that the 86+ pump is quite a bit cheaper than the 83-85.

Now you know what I'm talking about huh Steve? Little SOBs rock when they're set up right! Mine lasted about 2 years before I blew it up. Had practically an identical setup as yours too. I think my cam is meaner though. I've got that big bore piston for mine now 216cc at 11:1 comp. My wife will prolly be afraid of it after that.
