Hey guys

A quick question... What other engine(s) have you seen or heard of fitting
in a Tri-Z ? It can be either 2 or 4 stroke answers. I found a Tri-Z in awesome shape, sans motor, and I am considering buying it for a project.

Thanks

I had a TRI-Z with a YZ465 motor. It was almost a bolt in other than modifing the upper motor mount. It was slow and gay. My cousins modded 426EX freaking smoked that thing. It was running correctly too. Not worth it at all, I reccomend against that swap.

I know if you put in a 490 you'd have something that would make you wet your pants. I honestly don't know how the 465 could have been slow, i guarantee there was something wrong with it. Those engines are capable of pushing the bike 85+

The 490's get a lot of crap, but they are awesome. I would go with a IT490 engine.

I've heard that the 83-87 yz250 engines are pretty much a direct bolt in. But, I would research it a little more.

Seemed to run fine to me. I got it from RockThunder on here, he will tell you the same. My buddy also just sold a really nice and original with a fresh piston YZ490. It was the last year, 91 maybe? The thing would wheelie in pretty much all gears but I freaking killed that thing on my HARLEY! The YZ490 had a head start and was in second or 3rd gear. I was in first and flew past that thing sideways and kept pulling away HARD! I did all the work to my Harley myself but it's nothing fancy. 10 to 1 pistons ($95 with rings), jetted carb, straight pipes, ignition box, cam and air filter. It also weighs about 850 pounds with me on it. I have absolutly no respect for the big air cooled Yamaha 2-strokes at all. I had one and it got smoked by a smaller 4-stroke 4-wheeler. Then my buddy had one and I killed it on my Harley. I've also been around a DT400 which would get killed by my 1976 TT500. WTF.

It just doesn't seem right to me because my 490 hauls ass. My custom 400 does around 75 and the 490 will blow by that with about quarter throttle.

I'm just stating my experiences with them. I'm not saying they suck and are slow and thats a fact. lol. This is just my opinion.
