iv posted recently about my 86 yamaha 225dx.
it would sputter and shoot flames out the carb with starting fluid only.
many of you suggested a bad valve, or bad valve timing. i looked into the valve timing.
what i found is that the cam gear rotates the wrong way! the intake valves opens, then the exhaust opens right afterwards.
the reason is the previous owner put a pull starter/recoil off some other trike, and it rotates the motor backwards.
i should have realized earlier, cause the recoil didnt match the motor case right, and only had 2 bolts holding it in.
anyone have a recoil for this trike they want to sell:)?

also, are there any other yamaha's that use the same recoil?
i found only one on ebay, and it was a rebuild and they wanted $100
i called a local yamaha dealer and they had a new one for $250!
i cant afford to spend much on this wheeler, and a old one will do just fine.
OMFG!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! thats hella funny! keep the recoil just swap the carb to the front and exhaust straight out the back!

Yamaha 1983-84-85 ytm-200E shaft recoil are the same.
Not the chain driven ytm-200, they have the decrompression mechanism built into the recoil and it will not work.
Concerning the invert recoil, did you post pictures of the trike on the forum???

heres the only pic i have
cant really see the recoil tho.
i looked at the recoil thats on it for any sort of identification, but couldnt find anything.

I now see why you were saying the valves were opening in reverse order....lol
Never seen that one coming.:)

yeh, im by no means a mechanic but i know the basics of how these machines work. it was really throwing me for a loop why it wouldnt run.
but, putting the wheeler in gear and pushing it a few inches, i can see that the cam chain turns the opposite way that the recoil turns it.
im may try having a buddy in his truck pull the wheeler in 1st gear to see if it will start.
i know iv seen people use a rop when they dont have the recoil, but i dont see how i could do that here.
you dont even need that! just sit on it while a buddy pushes it, make sure everything is turned on and hold the gear shifter up and when you get goin good let it drop into gear and it should fire right up!
WOW!!
I bet that had you wanting to pound your head into a brick wall, until you figured it out.
I hate to say it... but I dont even think trr would have done that.

That is funny. One for the campfires for sure.

Good job it wasn't 2 stroke - there's a good chance she'd have fired up!
Just imagine, you've got it going, eager for that first ride. You open the garage door, wheel her out, jump on, and then, in front of all the neighbors you'd be going backwards into the garage so fast you'd be paying the neighborhoods laundry bill for a week!

i called the guy i bought the yamaha off of. asked him if he had any other recoil for the trike, cause the one on it was turning the motor in the wrong direction.
he said it had started with the recoil on it. it clearly not the one meant for the trike, only 2 bolt holes line up.
when i push the trike in gear, the cam chain turns the opposite direction that the recoil pulls it. it opens the exhaust before the ignition. i dont see how it could have started with the recoil thats on it.
well some people lie, I bought a 200x that the guy told me it had a new clutch and brand new jets, and said it would start on the first kick. It was cheap I new the guy was lying about it, the clutch had never been changed, it had nearly a gallon of oil in it, the carb was corroded shut and no good, and the kicker gears were stripped.
you could always take ti back to him and ask him to start it for you lol

Thats what I did when I got my lil bro a dirtbike. Guy told me it ran and would if I cleaned the carb... well it didnt so I drove back there and asked him to start it now that I cleaned the carb.
Had bad wiring and a blown top end... gave me my money back cause I had my lil bro with me, lol

What if the guy recoiled the dog cage backward? Flipped the spring, put the teeth in backward, etc... That would turn the engine backward when the cord was pulled...

i tried to take apart the recoil and see if i could make it turn the opposite(correct) was....now all i have is a bunch of parts lying on the floor of my shed lol. not sure how to put it back together.:wondering

WOW! Sometimes its so obvious its impossible to see until it's pointed out. That is a good one. Atleast theres nothing wrong with your motor!

LMFAO!! your a glutton for punishment homie!
step away from the trike:naughty:
recoils SUCK I would rather split the cases on 10 million 2 strokes then rebuild 1 recoil! + having gorilla hands dosnt help:)

yeh, i wasnt thinking about that crazy coiled up spring under the the wheel that the cord is on.
doesnt really matter, the recoil didnt work on the trike any way:rolleyes:
my buddy should be over tomorrow and we are gonna try to push start the trike.
if that works, ill drop some cash on a correct recoil.
i think i am a glutton for punishment. i spent several hours this summer trying to get a 71 yamaha at1-mx enduro bike my nephew had bought running. he got taken. it was in very rough shape. both brake, the clutch and the chain all needed adjustment. the carb was full of crap, and the gas tank was full of rust. i tried my best, but never got it to start. after much effort, the spring on the kick start broke. even if i had got it to run, the tires were weather cracked and probly would have failed after alittle riding.
still, there is some enjoyment in working on these older machines.

me and my buddy tried to get the trike started by towing it behind my truck.
i couldnt do it in my yard, cause we just had a inch of snow fall and the tires would just drag.
so, we went to a nearby side road to try it:naughty:
on the forth run, when my buddy put it into 3rd gear it started to fire. it was soo close to running!
on the fifth try, a big white truck with blue lights flashing pulled up behind us!
the sherrif was cool, and said we shouldnt try on the road cause if a local officer saw us we would be in trouble. iv rarely had a officer be that nice.
we did get the thing to fire on its own, so now i just have to find a recoil i can afford.
