Q's on two stroke oil and mix ratio

The new R that I just go (85 ported and polished, with shaved head), Is being mixed at 50to1 with amsoil dominator oil, that is what the previous owner has in the tank. I have always been a 32to1 kind of guy, and am a little iffy on 50t1. What's everyone running for their ratios? Havent had a two stroke in a couple years, what's the best oil I should run, or something that has great performance without breaking the bank? Is that amsoil dominator any good? (I used to use Benol, but found out thats no good for winter).

If you do a search on google, you will see some info about mixing ratios based upon riding style.

Your peak power will be found at a ratio at 18 to 1.

Most people seem to be running 28-32 to 1.

That's off of one of the big two stroke sites from what I remember.

The guy tested all ratios from 8: all the way up to 100:1...basic findings were that while peak power is at 18:1...it's a waste unless your at high rpm every second.

i like 50:1 motul...smells good.. but i always throw in a little extra oil so it's more like 40:1. Thats on my KX, haven't got to mix gas for the Z yet.

I am in the same boat as you, got a new to me 86 250r and have asked this question several different ways, I hope you get a better response than I. However the genral suggestion ended up being 32:1 with some sort of synthetic oil. The amsoil is suppose to be the best according to my research, however I run Golden spectro because I can find it easily out here in Cali. Been hearing good things about KLOTZ too. Post a pic of that bike bro, I want to see it!

X2 on that. cant go wrong with Klotz. smells awesome, and performs awesome at 32:1. havent fouled a plug yet in my R, my KX, or my CR. i wouldnt recommend anything else.

yea i was goign to recommend 32:1 or 40:1. I've done a lot of kart racing tuning. they guy had 2 motors and we tested everythign frmo 20:1 to 65:1 and foudn that the best over all results was about a 25:1 but then that meant a lot of extra oil being pumped through the system and clogging up the exhaust some. (think that's right been about 2 years) we settled on 32:1 as it seemed to be the best of well oiling and performance overall and you can get a little mixer that comes presetup to mix it at 32:1 or 40:1 and so on.

R50 is a great synthetic and Super Techniplate(20% Benol castor) is my favorite of the Klotz lineup.

Interesting that some studies have shown 20:1 to aid in producing more hp than 50:1. I guess I grew up thinking that it was harder for the ignition to efficiently burn the fuel with more oil in it, therefore I reasoned that a lighter oil ratio would provide more complete combustion.

Thinking about it differently now when considering the reduced friction that a higher oil concentration in the fuel contributes to.

I ran my first 2-strokes(in the 80's) on 20:1 and believe it or not, I can't remember EVER fouling a plug on my first '85 R(owned in '85-'86), the new '86 RM250 I traded it in on, or the new '86 Tri-Z(other than one plug due to my putting too large a mainjet in after installing reeds/spacer/K&N/new DG pipe in 1992) I had from '87-'93, .....all ran on 20:1 and often times on Castrol brand 2-cycle motorcycle oil.

I did have an '86 Tecate in 1988-'89 that would eat a plug everytime you approached the machine and looked at it like you wanted to crank it, but that was due to stator issues before I knew what stator issues were.

I've mixed 32:1 in every machine since.

32:1 of some castor base or blend. IMO my old 1980's motors crave lots of oil to keep the crank and main bearings alive. I had a 1989 LT250R with cases that had never been split that lasted 18 years and would have keep going had I not over honed the piston clearance clearance and got a thrust washer wedged under the crank.

I tried AMS 40:1 synthetic before I split the case and there was virtually no oil in the crankcase. I am using up the AMS and never going back to synthetic.

I use amsoil dominator oil in my 86 R smells good and it seems to work well

Yeah I was thinkin 32to1 was a nice in between number. I like benol and all, but heard or read you cant run that stuff in the winter for some reason, maybe I'm wrong.
So I guess I'm gonna go to 32to1 and richen up my jetting a bit just in case. I am unsure what is in the carb (some model kehin 38mm). The bike runs fairly crisp right now which has me worried I'm running a little lean, but I really havent put any time on the bike yet, just a few rips around the yard. I may actually lean out the carb a bit and install a dial-a-jet, havent decided yet.

That's made by maxima isnt it? I used that stuff a couple years ago in the ole blaster, worked great!

I always thought castor provided better protection for winter storage. I never remember having a problem with it in the winter. 927 is what I started out with and ran in the winter.

I like Yamalube because it is a cheap blue semi-synthetic. Always found it coating my crankcase when rebuilding.

927 is a bean oil, it turns to sudge in cold wether, the last time I had to mix it I put the bottle in the oven for a few mins so it would even pour out!

I have had good luck running Royal Purple, its a full sythentic but it's a bit pricey and hard to find some times.

I think with winter I'm going to stick with the amsoil dominator, then switch to Klotz Beaner when spring hits.
