Yes you need a puller. I would use a generic three jawed puller from any auto part store. Download a manual and get a tester. You really should check everything else out first before going for the stator.

Don't hold me to it but I think the 200's (not the x) are the same at least for testing the ignition system. I know to test the stator you just do a continuity test off the two wires coming out of the motor. Test them one at a time to ground. One is for the lights one is for the Ignition. Test the one that goes to the cdi box.

Im suprised nobodys mentioned this yet, or maybe nobody knows about this trick?

Look at the wiring harness coming from the stator area, it should travel about halfway up the frame and have a connector there. There should be a 2 prong connector (usually green and yellow wires) and a single black wire. Take that black wire and unplug it, and pull back the rubber a bit to expose the metal. Hold it up to a bolt or somewhere it can ground. Dont actually touch it to the bolt, etc, just hold it close enough for a spark to jump. While you are holding the wire, have a buddy pull the engine over. If a spark jumps from the wire to the bolt/frame/whatever, then your stator is fine. If there is not spark, try a different spot, and if it still doesnt spark, then your stator is bad.

The Honda 200 motors (185 200 200x) are very well known for the exciter coil going bad. They will quite completely or have a weak spark, sometimes they will even work cold bad stop sparken when they warm up.. They are around 7-12 bucks depending on where you get'em.. Its a cheap and easy fix if you have the right puller.. Like John said the 3 jaw puller aint a good idea and will most likely ruin something..
