thinking about it.... Need to find some cheap tires to stud. Put on medium priority. If someone hosts an event, that will put it higher on the list to do.:)

Same here. I have a front to stud, I just have to get some old rears mounted and then get studs for them all.
Bruce (350x'inNY) and I were talking about another Ice Racing event on Conesus Lake NY, it will be tuff to plan until the lake freezes over. It won't be until after late January (at the earliest ;) ).

OK, I already ordered some studs. Why not, right? There is a pond 2 minutes up the road from my house. One day last year there were a bunch of sleds and drunken bozos out there. It was like a party. I figure I'll give it a shot.
I got a set of studded tires waiting for the opportunity to get beat, Ill get in on this ride for sure if someone puts up a place and date.
I just went riding today and found a NICE pit for the warmer weather, well talk more about that in the spring

But I also see that you guy's are really getting into the ice racing out in your neck of the wood's.How many time's you guy's get together a year anyway's?I am pretty sure it'll be a good time indeed! :beer

I've only been on the boards since June and I've been on two rides. I've made some great friends already and plan on attending every event I can from now on. (Wish I went to the last one, doh!) I kinda doubt I'd have the time to make a trek like that out to Michigan, but if other people were doing it I'd definately try to find the time. Thanks for the invite!:w00t:

We were doing fine last year untill the track got bigger, Then broken coller bone from one of the bike riders, The Banshee rollover breaking every fender he had, bent forks on the 3 wheeler and you flip where we both escaped by very little.

On a crappier note, I just finnished sweating my stupid ass off trying to mount my 18's to my new supposed 10" wheels with 4x156 lug pattern. Well, turns out they aren't 4x156's. I dont know what the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro they are and I'm BS! Now my 18's are mounted on them and I don't have a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro tire machine here to break them down and the goddam ice is right around the corner. I sent the dude a very nasty message cause I'm pissed right now. Goddam it!

I don't know about you guys, but most of the bones broken by myself and friends were due to snow banks......hmmm...crash into the guy who is spinning out in front of you or jump the snowbank. Sometimes you make it and sometimes you don't. I have a bunch of ribs that wished that I did on a couple occasions.
One thing that I have learned is make a WIDE track and try to flatten the snowbank. The best racing always came from guys holding it pinned on a wide track and letting it rip. Big tracks are great, so I say go for it!!! New Hampshire is pretty far for me to go but maybe someday I can get to race with you.
Get lots of video, we are looking forward to a great winter. :beer

What is the difference between studding new tires and old tires? I was thinking of checking the local ATV shops for a pair of old 18" or 20" tires that fit my rims then just studding those. I might not get Chen Shings but there are a lot of other tires out that with similar patterns to hold studs. Do the CS's just hold the studs from pulling out better or something?
chris200x
12-07-2008, 09:29 PM
From what I gather Fox.. those cheng shins are a harder compound and hold the screws better,, Something with less sidewall flex as well.. Maybe someone else can add to this...

Thats what I though too but I hate to say it but what about the almighty TrailPro? trailpro
We know thay are harder then anything and don't flex much. I bet we could find plenty of used one cheap (heck I bet half the people on the boards have a set). Although I don't remember seeing any 18" TP's.
ChrisD
12-07-2008, 09:49 PM
In addition to being a hard compound tire, the chengs have tightly packed knobs...just like you want slicks on a dragstip. You want a solid contact patch. The Turf tamer is similar, but is a soft compound and have dimples in the middle of the lug which doesn't work well for studding.
You can stud any tire you want, and I'm sure that most will work OK, but some tires are better than others. I have a set of studded holeshots also, but there is too much space between each knob so they do not grip as well.
You also want a lightweight tire to reduce drag. You would hope to get a 2 ply tire. What are the pros? I know that some tires get pretty heavy.

Can we get some area codes so we can look up the spot to see how far it is. Is anyone coming to N.Y. I went over the river the other day and it was frozen over. Been real cold here in the Syracuse area for a month now.
Fox if you are going let me know, if all works out for me, we could go up together and save some money that way. We need to get together this winter on Oneida lake.:w00t:
I dont recall seeing Raffa post on these Ice racing threads, is he well? Hes a good dude and I want to go to his event this winter if he has one.

I would like to go to a couple of ice events this winter, not that I'm a big racer or anything but it would be fun to try out and it's always fun to hang out with some fellow trikers. I have a 4x8 trailer and have a couple of friends that may be interested depending on the weekends, they have bigger trailers which is good since the 350 takes up all the room on mine. I would be up for car pooling. Raffa's ice ride is yet to be determined.

you get the powermadd star hand gaurds,
then you need the mounts. powermadd makes a steel set that work ok but rox makes the billet ones that look and fit better. then the hand warmers (gauntlett) go over them and have pockets inside to fit over the plastic gaurds perfect!
hope that makes since....

I took some laps on Sunday for a shake down run, I put 1 kold kutter stud in the front of each nobby and cant believe the forward bite I have. This thing is hooking up too good. I will have to pull some studs out on the next run so I can get some spin and loosen it up a bit. Hit the gas at mid turn and lose all ability to steer.
The ice is ready, 5 to 7 inches everywhere. Now we have 3 inches of snow on it with no way to plow it.
We really should start planning on a date to get everyone possible up here. I would like to get a huge turn out on one of the weekends. Best would be in Feb. We can do just some fun riding or we can have like a tounament style race with 1/4 field heats,1/2 field heats, and feature event with the full field. Every race earning points so we can crown the overall champ. Any thought, any interest guys.

Where in NH is the lake you are riding? I'd love to get up there one weekend this winter and if I do I can bring my 4x4 quad to plow.

We run in Milton NH 03851 on Milton 3 ponds just north of the town beach. The entry RD to the lake is called Saltbox RD (driveway). I have a truck with a plow to clear it off but I need 12 inches of ice.

Yeah, we used to run into that problem here all the time. You need a lot of ice to get a truck out there. That lake is about 320 miles from here. Definitely do-able but quite a long road trip. Hopefully if you guys set something up I'll be able to make it.
