I have a 1985 350X and have been at this awhile and can't find a solution. Any info is helpful. Thanks.

The carrier bearings died. Ordered a RAD twin row carrier for 85 350X. Went to reassemble and the brake hub side carrier seal is not the same size as the brake hub itself. The hub itself is necked down where the seal would ride. There seems to be about a 1/4 inch difference between the hub and the seal diameters.

The old carrier seal for the brake side had the same size difference. The previous owner must not have cared but I do.

I assumed it was the wrong seals from RAD so I got stock seals from the local dealer and they are the same that came in the RAD carrier. So the problem looks to be that the brake hub is necked down too far to fit the seals. It fits the axle splines so it must be something of the same bloodline but it is different.

Did an 86 350x have a smaller diameter mating surface for the brake hub/carrier seal interface?

Is there an aftermarket 85 brake hub I may purchase?

I have a mill and can cut down the seal seat but cannot mill it's diameter down. I have heard that a 250r hub can be cut down. Is that true?

If you have any thoughts please post. I gotta fix my toy so I can get my fix...

no...your hub is worn

the rubber seal eats a grove in the hub. you could have it welded up and turned back down on a lathe

Thanks Swigin. It is way beyond worn from the rubber though. There really is nearly a 1/4 inch gap in there. Those two parts were never meant to be used together. It is like the carrier is from another machine.

the liquid 250r hub fits, its needs to be cut down and Also you need to use the 250r brake stay, rotor and caliper. Mr. Atc had a thread about this on 3wheeler.org.

right, and so will 250x/300ex and 450r but they all use the same seal.

I will get a pic and post it. The hub is just necked down where the seal would ride.

What is the difference between the 85 and 86 rear? RAD lists two different model carrier for the 350x and I am just curious why?

it has to do with the way the sprocket mounts up to the hub, you can use an 86 carrier in the 85 swinger, but you need an 86 sprocket and bolts to attach that sprocket to the hub...

Maybe you could take the bearing carrier and hub to a local store that sell bearings. I'm sure they could measure it for you and find the right seal. And it won't cost you more than $20

Its my belief that the seal mating surfaces on the disk hub and sprocket hub are just thin sleeves pressed onto the hubs. I didn't figure this out till I looked at a worn one I had real close and tried tapping it off and it split. Its very similar to a repair sleeve for a harmonic balancer on a motor. So maybe your missing the sleeve? I don't belive you can buy just the sleeve from honda, but maybe one could be made.

If it is a sleeve I may be able to butcher a used 300ex carrier and just mill down the sleeve. Freeze the carrier, blast the sleeve with a torch and knock it off then swap it to my 85 350x carrier. Thanks for the info.

yes the difference is the 86 sprocket and bolts are countersunk...and rads 86 carrier sticks out so far it will hit the bolts for the 85 sprocket bolts

HOT STUFF!!! I figured it out. The mystery brake carrier I have is from an 84 250R!!! The 85 350X seal dimensions are 52x62x7 (mm) and the 84 250R seal dimensions are 42x62x7. I looked through enough pictures until I found this link on ebay for a brake hub that shows a good pic that looks exactly like what I have where it necks down further:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-ATC-250R-250-R-ATC250R-Rear-Brake-Hub-Disc_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116 QQitemZ370066192428QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAcc essories

then looked on bikebandit.com and looked up the part numbers and the part numbers also showed the seal dimensions. I am going to double check the measurements tomorrow but I am pretty sure I have solved the riddle.

Thanks for all the tips.
