View Full Version : Tecate Guys, KDX Tecate

My R is in the shop and I'm really missing having the Tecate around to be the backup rider.

I was looking at some vids online of the KDX220R. Great little motors huh? Wide ratio tranny, lighting coil, plenty of pep to haul anyone around. The power would be very similar to my old 85 250 Tecate I think. That thing was piped,ported and had a 38mm Mikuni TMX on it.

Anyone here riding a KDX? I know CR480R has a KDX/KX hybrid Tecate.

I would have to modify the stock 85 engine cradle again to make the motor fit but thats minor.

I may just rebuild my 88 KX500 and get that back in there but ...

How's it run? Strong?

I like the 220R idea but I don't want to be too down on power.

sounds like a fun project.. I would not expect the power output to be impressive after owning a 250 and 500, but I am sure with the right gearing it would be plenty to get around in the trails... not to mention very light and versitile. The kdx200/220 have more in common with a kx125 than a 250... The kdx250 trans in my T3 is great.. I can creep around in 1st gear, get a perfect launch in 2nd, and still have a decent top speed in 5th with stock T3 gearing.. thats not gonna happen with a KX trans.

It does seem like the better choice for an all around machine.

A CRF250X motor would be interesting, and expensive. :( If I rebuild my 500 the right way it'll be expensive too. Versus buying a complete KDX and robbing the motor.

Sounds like a cool idea. But having the light coil makes up for big bore. After running around with out a head light for years it now makes a big difference in having a good light. Where did the tecate go?

basicaly picked it up as a basket case bike but alli needed was the rear wheel and forks for the kx500 i have
