i have a 86 yamaha 225dx. i want to try different cam timing, but cant figure out how to take off the cam gear. i take the cover off, and i see the gear with just one bolt. but the motor turns either way, so how do i stop the motor from turning so i can get the bolt off? also, does this bolt come off counterclockwise?

the cam gear has a pin that alligns it on the cam you just cant move the gear but if you do hold the crank and take the bolt out

Is the cam stock? why try "different cam timing"?? Is it aligned at TDC??........
Air guns allow us to remove things that normally holders are needed. Otherwise, i try to use a piece of brass or a penny between things to keep them from turning.
I always use a penny for torquing a crank or clutch nut.

i know that the cam gear has a pin to align it, i wanted to take it off, to move the chain on it. then put the gear back on. if there is a way to move the position of the chain on the cam gear without taking the cam gear off, please LMK.
i wanted to try different cam timing, cause it wont start. if i spray starting fluid into the carb or motor, it will fire and shoot flames out the carb. almost like the intake valve is open when the spark plug fires.
i have 2 carbs, both i tried to clean. the floats and float needle work on both, yet i dont get even a sputter with either carb. its like no gas is getting sucked through the carb. i can hear some suction on the intake stroke though. maybe its not enough?
