So I'm seeing two very very different looking sprocket hubs on many tri-z's out there. Can anyone tell me if the old dish style sprocket hub was a factory piece on both 85 and 86 or did the newer "star" looking hub come factory on some models? Can't put any kind of pattern together.

the "Star" looking hub is a BANSHEE hub..they fit perfectly the TRI-Z 85 & 86
The OEM hub for the 85 & 86 Z are the same.

All Z's had a aluminum Sprocket hub on both years.Identical except color from 85-86
The "Star" looking ones are from Banshee's and direct bolt ons.

The stock Z sprocket hubs had a tendency to loosen up near the axle and get sloppy.
The Shee ones were cast one piece steel and were stronger.

looks like the banshee one replaced the oem hub now.

Can you describe the failure of the stock ones (if I go look at a Tri-z that has this hub). Is it a failure of the piece itself, or is there some kind of nut that you have to keep tight? If memory serves me right, I think the oem hub had a steel insert?

And thanks for the replies!

Yeah the stock hub was aluminum and pressed on to a steel sprocket looking insert at the center.
The aluminum would loosen up,and rock on the steel insert,no matter how tight the nuts were.

The Banshee hubs can be bought almost new on Ebay for less than 10 bucks.

Great. One last question.....when you said 85-86 were different colors....were they a painted finish or anodized like the rims?

The 85 yellow Z had a gold finish.I dont know if it was paint or anodized.
The 85 1/2 and 86 had silver finish.

Sinbad, or Mosh, have either of you personally taken a banshee sprocket hub, and put it onto a stock Tri-Z rearend without mods?

Eric, if you look at the pics of my black Z, I am running a banshee sprocket hub with ABSOLUTELY NO MODS. bolts right on and even has the same bolt pattern as the Z sprockets. looks and works a tone better.

Eric I just read your other post. Mine was brand new and I had no problems? What are you running into that it is not working?

I am uploading pics right now. The problem is the race will not go far enough into the carrier to press against the bearing. All I would be doing is tightening the hub down on the seal.

I hope Im wrong about this, its been a very frustrating weekend, so Im not thinking completely clear. Anyways, I will let the pics speak for themselves..... stand by. Oh and thanks for replys.

In fact, if you go to the dealer and order a hub for a tri-z, you will get the heavy cast iron Banshee version. They are now the same part#. The lightweight cast aluminum oem version is long gone.

Heres a few pics of what I have here. Same part number between this and the blaster. I checked multiple years.

The problem as stated before, is that it dosent slide all the way into the carrier. The seal stops this from happeneing. If I installed it and torked it down, I would just be torqueing on the seal.

See what I mean?

That does not look offset enough like a shee or Z hub.
I wonder if they sent you a Warrior hub.
The Z, shee, and blaste,r all take the same bearings and seals.
The warrior took its own bearing and seal kit..different than the shee or z.
Willing to bet that is a warrior hub.
The warrior hubs will not fit on a shee or Z

I think its time I took a break from workin on bikes, been up to many late nights this weekend to see straight.

Hub works, it was my bad. The seal was "bloated" from to much grease in there. when the axle came out with the old hub on it, I supose the seal expanded a little out as well. I just took a socket and a hammer to it, taped it right back into its place with whole lota grease comin out.

Sorry folks, my bad. She's all ready to go.......

EDIT: Rob, its got to be the pics, because the offset is right. Only thing that threw me off was the shaft.

I just took a quick look at the pics.
Just a guess I made, why it wouldnt fit.

I know the burnt out feeling all to well.
Next thing you know, you are dropping beers and spilling them.

Next time there is fitment issues, grab a bigger hammer!

Oh I went way past that the other night! I went to pick up Halls bikes. Woke up at 5 am to hit the road and meet him in Illinois. Well I ended up staying up to 4 am the next night getting bikes together.

When you talk to Corey next, ask him what I accidently did because nobody was watching me!

Really really stupid simple mistake!

Shouldnt have stayed up that long!
