I want to get smaller tires for both of my 200s's , can i put tires like the 250r has on my 200s's?

Thanks,

Justin

Assuming you're talking about 20" tires like a water cooled R, yes you can, but it will ride a bit rougher since you have no rear suspension. You would also have to re-gear a bit higher to compensate for the smaller diameter tires to avoid losing overall speed in each gear.

Also, they take a 9" rim if you don't already have 9-inchers on it.

How do you re-gear??

Thanks,

When you go to a shorter tire, you (typically) either reduce the number of teeth or the rear sprocket, or increase the number on the front sprocket....the later being the easiest and cheapest.

I don't know what you're geared now, so I can't tell you specifically what size you need.

Usually, I change the front sprocket one-tooth size UP for a 2" shorter tire.

I have had a 20' tire on my 200s and there wasnt alotof wide open moments anyway with that bike so I like the better acceleration . But a regear would be good. It just made the bike more "peppy" and slide sideways alot more:twisted:

Throw the tires on and see how you like it. If it winds out faster than you like go up a tooth on the front. My .02

Good advice above about trying them on before you gear-up. You may like it better (effectively)geared a bit shorter by shorter tires. Depends on where you ride and how you want it to run.

I guess I was advising based on my tastes.

Oh ok, I thought you meant physically messing with the gears in the tranny..

yea, i believe i'm just running stock front and back sprockets on the 85 200s.
and definately on the 84.

i thought i would be a little more 'peppy' also, and thats what i want really, i like riding dirt trails and stuff all that mudding and *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* just fucks your stuff up.

Thanks again for the info.!!

Did that with the 185S. Gearing down increased acceleration and top end. Still running 22in tires but went from a 11t to a 10t.

If all you want is a little more peppy I wouldnt mess with a regear. Like metioned above. Ride the bike around like it is. Notice how it acceerates and the top speed is. Then ride agin with the smaller tires ,and finnaly regear to your own needs. You dont have to re gear , its just how you want it.

just thinking, wouldnt the smaller tires mean less ground clearance for the big drum brakes?

if the drum gets in the way, ill just take it off, i only just my front brakes anyways...
and I'll prolly get the small tires first, because I like the sportier look. and then if i want even more pep ill just re-gear.

i would prefer more acc. then top end, but thats just me,

20" diameter vs. 22"diameter = 1" loss in ground clearance.

My X has a 14T sprocket. Should I put a 12T on there? I know that OEM is a 12T. I'm using the OEM diameter, but it has trailpros on it. I don't like them at all.

does that x have good top end with a 14 tooth on it? how is the acceleration?

The accel. could be better, but the only thing I have to compare it to is my KX125. do you mean top end as in the high revs, or as in the cylinder and head? It seems like its too hard to pop a wheelie, and also it tops out at like fifty, but thats just a guesstimate. thanks.

surely it goes faster than 50 with a 14 tooth, im runnin stock gearing and gps'ed myself at 56 rapped out. by top end i meant speed.

it's kinda hard to guess it feels like fifty-something. I raced my X against my Bros KX125, my KX (ridden by my Dad) and my Dads KDX (ridden by my Uncle). I was given about a 200 ft head start. At 200 ft I have it pinned in 5th, and about 100 ft later they all pass me going at least 10-15 MPH faster.

Yeah, now you know why I'm picking up a T-3 tomorrow! That'll show 'em! Seriously though the only thing I'll be able to do with it, if I get it, is sit on it while by Bro revs his KX250, and pretend!
