CDI Testing

OK I found a procedure in the manual for testing the CDI with a multi meter. Here is a pic of it:

I understand (atleast I think I do) for instance to check EXT (Black/Red) you would put probe according to table:

- to EXT (Bk/R)
&
+ to SW (bk)

which should give me a reading of 0.1 to 20
see the pic below of how I was reading the chart (Brown arrows is how I am reading chart). Is that correct?

So I did the tests according to how I preceive the chart on KΩ. Here is the results:

1. I got all .OL reading for every test.

So I reversed the probes and this is what I got:

Ext(Bk/R) + SW(BK) = 3.346
PC(Bu/Y) + SW(BK) = .OL
PC(BU/Y) + EXT(BK/R) = .OL
PC(BU/Y) + E1(G) = .OL
PC(BU/Y) + E2(G) = .OL
E1(G) + SW(BK) = .OL
E1(G) + EXT(BK/R) = 3.350
E2(G) + SW(BK) = .OL
E2(G) + EXT(BK/R) = 3.310

I don't trust these results because the probes were reversed but then again if I had them on normal I got .OL on everything? :banghead I don't want to just throw parts at it till it is fixed. Maybe I did something wrong?

I've been there with the cdi testing with no luck. I used a radioshack multi meter and prety much got the same result you did. every one i asked says the best thing to do is to get one you know is good and see if that fixes the problem no one I've asked has had any luck testing them.

i tnink you need a specific type of tester for the cdi's.
pay the shipping and i'll send you a cdi.

I just happened to be on line when i saw this. According to My buisness partner Bill, who is a former Honda Mechanic, you can not test Honda CDI's with normal test equipment. Honda CDI's are fully transistorized and a specific tester, avalible only through Honda, is required. Normal test equipment will give false readings. If you used a OEM manual it should say this on the page refering to the CDI.

Yes this is true, the top image says you need a specific tester. But the bike is from 1984 and technology was different back then compared to now. Can you explain to me what " transistorized " means and why I can't test with a digi multi meter.

100% correct for Hondas. Especially true for liquid R models, or so i've heard. Everything is tested in a particular sequence. And if everything tests ok, then it's the cdi.
