View Full Version : Selling Disease

I guess I am just a pack rat, but i have a problem selling my toys!
I have 7 trikes, 4 of which are decent and 3 need a lot of work. (Not to mention boats, cars, and computers)
Why is it that I can entertain the idea of buying another basketcase machine because it's a "good deal"?, but can't even fathom getting rid of even parts?
The wife said "No more buying until you sell something and then you can use the money from the sale to buy whatever you want". (Of course this was 6 months ago...her bark is bigger than her bite :naughty: )
Please tell me I'm not the only one afflicted with this disease?
Anybody have any interesting ways of overcoming this problem?

Its an addiction more so than a disease that I too suffer from. I sold off two of my trikes and bought another car. It never ends.

Nearly every one I sell I regret at some point. I had a pair of 225DXs I wish I would have kept, well somewhat.
But the rear kicker is I had a TRI-Z with a YZ465 motor. It was slow so I sold it. But now I have a Tri-Z again and sure wish I had the front fender, seat, and all 3 tires and proabably more.
I sold a parts 1983 ATC250R, wish I had that for parts for the 84 I have now and the rear axle to use in my 200x.
Almost forgot. I bought a running 1985 ATC250R for $400, I ended up selling it for $600 but man, I kick myself for that. Had a PRM grab bar and Hondaline front fender brace. Sucks! Theres a whole lot more too.

You are not alone Cybrman...... I think 99% of 3ww members have the dreaded "toy disease" Between 3 wheelers , jeeps, pick-ups, dirt bikes, etc.... even dogs, lol.... I think it would take me an hour just to list them all, and then I'd need another hour just to remember which ones run. (Okay, all the dogs do run, lol) I have picked up quite a few 3 wheelers thinking I could part em out to make a few bucks... but I could never pull the trigger. Instead they just get labeled as "projects".....

I can't get myself to sell anything either. I have parts that I don't need, but I can't sell them. You know, just in case you might need it one day. But, I'm very neat and clean about it. I want everything to be organized and put in boxes on shelves.

I've been clearing some crap out, even giving away stuff if nobody wants it. I would rather see somebody put a part to use than have it collect dust in my garage attic. I have bought 2 trikes just to scavenge the parts I needed off them and parted out the rest (yeah I'm one of "those" guys :naughty:) I am going to be selling my 185s soon since I bought a 200x and am going to use the 185s money from the sale for 200x parts. I have a KFX 400 I barely ride and a sled that I don't get to ride a ton since we don't get a lot of snow (last year was an exception). But I won't sell either of those since they are paid for and I can't get anything nicer for less. My Toyota truck sits in the street waiting for me to drive it, but that is maybe once a month.

i have the same disease. I have too many projects to list. I put just enough money in them to get running and driving and then buy another. It's a never ending process.

It's worse here - I'm not married, so no one to talk any sense into me.
I currently have three 3-wheelers - all projects, in addition to the ATVs and jetskis and dirtbikes and streetbikes and snowmobiles and mountain bikes.
And CraigsList ain't helping AT ALL - deals galore every day.

I really know what you mean, as long as my bills are paid, and my bellys full of food and vodka, the rest goes towards killer trips, and bikes.

My problem seems to be that since I buy the crazier trikes, the suspension 70s, the suspension 185s, the suspension yt175s and the aftermarket 90/110 frames and parts that it is very hard to part with bits and pieces to try and fund the newest toys. I look really hard for what parts I have and most of them are super hard to come by. Most people don't want to pay any decent money for these parts that are so hard to come by though, but they still want them. Most of this stuff isn't off the shelf trike parts, but low production aftermarket pieces, that just no longer exist but aren't that popular since they aren't for the 250r or the 350x, but rare in their own right. I mean how many people have NOS oil cooler kits for atc90/110 or the 185/200 trikes or the 200x? How many people have suspension 70s, 185s, or yt175s? The only thing is a small portion of the people on here really dig this kind of odd stuff. How many people on here have Tigers or Tiger parts? Believe it or not, more people on here own Tigers than own big bore, stroker atc90s or Suspension 70s! People will pay a pretty good chunk of change for a 350x frame but laugh at $1000 or more for a frame that was never mass produced and more than likely liess than 50 frames. It amazes me at times. I'm afraid that I might be having a sale of some of my projects here very soon though.

It's worse here.....2 people with the disease.
Actually, Mosh keeps saying there are too many, but we can't part with any of them. Sell one to make room, 2 more show up.
When he sold his trail Z, I told him he would regret it! He does.

Every time i get rid of something, i need it IMMEDIATELY.
example: i saved my broken laptop power cord for 3 weeks after getting a new one.
DAY AFTER the garbage men took it away, the electrical connection on the end of the plug started going bad, for whatever reason. THE CORD ON THE OTHER ONE WAS PERFECT. now i have a cobbled cord that could break at any time, and i cant return the other one because it was a cheap aftermarket EBAY part. but the OEM one is 120, and it is an val cord, so noone has a universal one for it.
Dammit!
it always happens like this.

I have this same disease. Is there a cure for it? i did however 2 weeks ago sell 3 of my 200s' 2 ran one was just a parts bike. i never used them so i sold them to a father and a son they dont have much. the boy was about 10 so i figured it would give them something to do and hopefully keep the little one out of trouble
mine got so bad I was hiding trike in the woods before I would slowly intergrate them into the pack to look less conspicuos.... still got called out! lol! had like 20+ complete trikes with maybe only 5 that ran thousands of parts etc etc.... now I just have my 85 250R and a few parts here and there.....
My main affliction is lowriders and lincolns.... more importantly LOWRIDER LINCOLNS! lol!
62 continental
91 towncar
97 fakewood (non black wood truck, lol fake wood)
98 towncar
I see lincolns in parking lots and around town, and I want to talk to them! even feel bad for lincolns that are broken and sad sitting under a tree being used for a meth lab...

It's all about saving the machines!!
I need some parts for a bike and instead of buying em new I pickup a whole "parts" bike with the intention of merging the 2 into 1. Well its too easy to say well gee another couple hundred and I can have TWO bikes that run woohoo.
Yeah lets save that one too!! Now instead of having one bike and extra parts you have two bikes and need more parts.....it never ends....
Next thing ya know its like rise of the machines in the backyard or something!
Good Stuff though!!

Yeah, there is usually a progression. First a hardtail or 2. Then it's the 200x and then the 350x. Then maybe a 250r or a Tri z. Then you start on the aftermarket parts. Then it gets really bad. Suspension 70s. I travelled to Tenn. to pick one up and planned a vacation around it. Then yamahas and their suspension kits. Now it's Tigers. I got it bad!!!!

I've got the disease, only sell something if there's no way I could use it. Got about 3 trikes, dozen sleds, and parts laying everywhere. Ebay and craigslist have only made things worse.

I sell my 250rs like its my job, sold away 3 86 triZ's and 3 250rs (85-86) now. Rather see them go to someone that will race them in the otc crowd, plus I still get the chance to race against them everytime I line up!
I just keep upgrading I find. Stock 250r to a modded 250r,
now im up to a 265 Duncan PV motor, Elka Elite suspension, Inverted front forks and a -1 houser swinger on beadlock rims, Kinda hard to beat that kinda deal!

I guess i got the bug pretty bad,but never really realized how bad it has alway's been.I actually did'nt know actually how much stuff I had until here lately when I decided to go thru all my part's and see what I actually had.For me it's kinda like going to the grocery store,I just go thru my stock and pick part's,and I have literally put a machine together in less than a day with my surpluss. But you'd think I'd get rid of some of the stuff..No way!! For some reason I never get rid of hardly anything, except to local customer's.I would'nt want it anyother way either, just keep buying,I say.

I got it bad too. I have one hiding in the bushes so the wife can't see it. My goal is to get enough fixed up so I can take all grandkids riding someday. Maybe they'll all be running about the same time that the kids are big enough to ride them. Everytime she starts to get on my case I just remind her of her scrapbooking addiction. She has way more money in her stuff.

I just starting to aquire some back up parts. I would get some parts bikes if I could find them cheap enough or mostly at all around here. The stuff I'm aquiring I kinda well LIE about. Oh it was only 5 bucks, shipped!:naughty:
