My 85 honda 250R wont idle. idle and air screws make no difference when adjusted. Anyone got any ideas?

I talked to a mechanic friend he said could be the cranks seals? anyway to test those?

Try a new plug. My 200m, thoe 4-stroke, often won't idle because of a bad plug.

Where would the air leak be?

Cracks or holes in the intake boot?

If you had an intake air leak or a base gasket leak, you would be way lean and the engine would scream at idle.

So, your idle is too low I am guessing. The 85 carb is limited so my question is this. You may have to "negotiate" an idle. I would take any excess slack out of the throttle cable. Can you adjust the screw at the top of the carb out to increase the idle? I have not used stock carbs in a long time ago so please forgive me. You probalby have the stock cable and thumb throttle, do you?

2 strokes are funny. I constantly adjust my idle from when the motor is a cold running motor to a warm motor. When the bike is cold at startup, I have to increase the idle, but when the motor is warm, I have to decrease it.

Can you give us more detail?

i had the same problem on my 86 250r. my problem was that the air filter had deteriorated so much that bits of it had been sucked into the reed valve.

i got it all out and it fixed the problem.

what kind of state is your filter in?

air filter is in good shape and the idle adjust does nothing and im using a stock cable and thunmb control no slack in the throttle cable

Sounds like you got a peice of debris blocking your pilot jet. Pull the pilot jet out and inspect it . You should be able to see thru it, its a very small opening. If not blast it with carb cleaner and compressed air till its clear and put it back in.
