hey all! i was wondering, on an 85 R, how hard is it to replace the oil seal around the kickstarter shaft, theres some oil leaking out from there on mine, and another thing, is there a seal around the shaft for the gear shifter? and if so, how hard is it to replace that?

Thanks!

yeah, theres a seal around the shifter shaft too.

They can be taken out with the shafts still going through them...you can ruin the old seals but you have to be careful with the new ones.

Or, since youre doing them both, buy a clutch cover gasket and pull the clutch cover so you take the kick starter assembly out, and replace that seal, then pull the shifter shaft out so you can get at it easier.

Just be careful installing new seals. a little grease on all surfaces works well, wipe off excess so dirt wont stick to it. You dont have to pull any covers off, just a last resort if you cant get the seals out.

I put a ziplock bag over the shafts to protect the new seals during installation and lube it up!

Works like a shaft condom......

LOL man thanks, that little health class really clarified what deepa was sayin, so is there any certain technique to gettin the old seals out? just pinch them with needlenose pliers or?

You can screw a coarse screw into them and pull on them - read below....

Honestly, seals can be stubborn! I have a hardened thin pick - about 1/8 diameter that comes to a sharp point and I tap it in between the seal OD and the case seal bore - then I can stuff a rag next to it and pry the seal out.

Use a sheet rock screw, use a nail, use a thin flat electrical screwdriver and or use whatever you wish..... Just remember that anything you aren't nice to and damage can be a potential leak down the road so try to think about whats happening and be gentle.

If you do scratch the seal seating bore, you just need to silicone or use semi hard drying peramatex on the outside of the seal before installing it.

Of coarse the best seal removal method is to remove the side case, protect the case with a rag and use a flat head screwdriver to pop it out.
