Well to make a long story short ive always been a fan of the two wheeled units untell my best friend died and i ended up with his 1985 tri-z. I love playing around the yard with this beast but absolutly hate it in the trails. In fact while trail riding the chain came off and put a hole in my case but that will soon be fixed. Anyways A friend of mine said he found a 1986 tri-z for 500 bucks on a classified add on the internet so i decided to check it out and after seeing the pics I just had to have it. From what he said its a big bore with a 10in extended swing arm(which i doubt its that long). Its got a lectron carb and a aluminum gas tank. This thing is extremly light weight. I just wonder if its really a big bore or if the guy was just one of those idiots that thinks .040 is a big bore. But it does need a new head gasket so I want to tear it apart and mill the head and surface the jug to get rid of any warp that may of happend when they blew the head gasket. Id also like to do the wrench report to both my tri-zs. Anyways what do you guys think? Once I get my 85 all fixed up ill post pics of both of them. And I cant wait to get my crf 490 out on the sand with this thing and race them  http://cycleworksracing.net/phpBB2/files/p2_153.jpg http://cycleworksracing.net/phpBB2/files/paint_135.jpg

The only way to check is to uncork the top and look. I'm 99% sure that front end is not Yamaha...if it is it's backwards in a big way.

Oh yes I got this baby for 500 bucks. The 85 I got for free I guess you could say.... But I brought it home and it started second kick. It seems to run pretty good. Just needs a little tlc and it will be where I like it. Only things I hate are the rear brake system is moved up to the handle bars and the front caliper is gone so I want to make that right and go back to stock set up. Also some idiot made the rear fender swiss cheese thinking it would really save him that much weight. So the triple clamps arent yamaha? I really dont know much about trikes. Just bikes and sleds so im lost in what parts should look like what but have a general idea. Can anyone tell me what kind of rear shock that is? It sure does ride nice :)

I would double your money in a heart beat if funds permited. You got a steal of a deal.
It was advertised as an 86, so it should have a 6 speed tranny. Check the code on the engine cases, if you see 1RX somewhere in the code youve got yourself an 86.
Great find man, that pipe is worth what you paid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT!
That swingers at least stretched 10".
Freakin SWEET FIND!!!!!
I would say find of the year. You freakin stole that sucker.
Great deal on that.......
If it is a big bore,it will have a 70mm or larger piston in it....
The front forks I cant see well,so cant help you there, but the tripples are for the
Tri-Z
I see they re worked the foot peg on the left side.I bet that is why you are missing the rear brake pedal on the right side. They must have cut the peg off that holds the brake lever. Then they just hooked it up to the front master cylinder.Need some better pics to tell.
I see the gas tank is gone.So where are they putting in the fuel?
Did they mount a tank under the blue air box cover, and not cut a hole for the fill cap?
EDIT!!! Those actually look like Honda trike forks on there.Maybe 350X or 85-86 250R

I noticed that too about not having an exposed gas cap.. Leaves a nice clean look to it. But cant be all that big of a tank it the cap and all is under the airbox cover. Dont you guys use a small tank when you guys move it to up there, id think youd have to use an even smaller one to get the cap to fit under the cover..
None the less a very nice looking bike.. And for $500 thats a damn good deal.. Thats our economy, a buyers market for sure..

Lol yeah rob I have one to many toys in the back yard. Need to get rid of some but it sure is nice to have them for relatives to ride when going on family trips.
And im up in Cache valley in the town of hyde park which is like 5min away from logan. And boostedcobra I would love to go ride but that is if I can get my trikes going. The 85 im waiting on the case to get here and the 86 needs the top end re machined.
The gas tank is Located where the air box is usally at on a stock Z. It holds barely over a gallon so yes its a little guy. Ill get some more pics up for you guys this weekend when I clear out the shed to make room for this beast.

I'd like to do something with the gas tank on mine. Not a real fan of the stock set up. I'd like to know what the thinking was to swap the places of the gas tank and air filter. lol.
I'm sure it wont' work but what about a Blaster tank? I noticed the blaster has a similar frame say out above the engine as a TRI-Z.

CV huh...I am in Millville, so like 10 minutes from you.
Most guys drop a tri-zinger tank under the cover, but cut a hole in the top to fill it,and put the cap on.
Nice buy for 500.....

thats a 85/86 atc250r front end, nearly the same forks that a 86 tri-z has. It has a trailing axle and it looks like someone put the forks opposite. It looks like he put a honda hub and wheel on(common tri-z thing). The forks should measure 39mm. I doubt its a 83/84 250r or 85/86 350x as the fork tubes are smaller(36mm) and the 350x had a leading axle. Maybe the triples are changed out for the smaller 85 forks? Get us a better picture of the front end, so we can identify it better.

Ok so I took some pics of the tank for you guys and hopefully good enough pics of the triple tree/forks. I tore it apart today. It isnt a big bore and it has one more size to go over then anything after that I will have to sleeve it. Also can anyone tell if someone has ported it? And after reading the wrench report my cylinder already has the extra boost port in it correct? Now I have to decide if I want to let it sit for winter or rebuild it right now or go big bore :naughty: Also for those that were thinking of a gas tank to use on these. I think my crf tank would drop right in there but the gas cap would have to come out of the plastic so it wouldnt be as clean of a look.
