I saw a tractor the other day with duals on it, which is pretty common. However, this one had smaller diameter outside tires, which would only come into play in muddy conditions, but not while on firm ground.

Has anyone ever seen this done on a trike or quad? I'd think it'd really increase traction without affecting steering or stressing the drivetrain in turns. When you did sink in a few inches, the other tires would start making traction and flotation.

I'd think a 21x8-9 or something similar would work ok. You might get laughed at, but maybe only before the first mudhole...

That could be very good in the mud! Like you said if things get bad the second set of tires will start to bite after the first wheels sink in. Try it if you have an extra set of tires around an let us know!

the problem is torque and weight, trikes have small engines and don't make nearly the torque of todays big utilities.

I just don't think thy have the engine to turn four tires effectively.
