My personal favorite are the 84-85's. They are simple, unique, and FAST! Not saying the 86-87's are slow, but they are a bit more pricey and tough to find parts for. The only real reliability issue with the Tecates is the stock flywheel/stator combo. The pair are available from Ricky Stator for like $250 and that takes care of that problem.

All Tecates can be tricky to find parts for, but the 84-85's are much easier to find stuff for.

If money is one of your concerns, don't even bother with the 86-87's.

hahahaha if money is the problem dont even bother with the 86- 87's.

if that doesnt put it plain and simple. no truer words if i do say so myself.

i have both years, and have had a lot easier time finding parts and such for my 85. i have a complete rolling 86, and have more money in it, then my near complete 85. i love both, that is why i have them, and will be looking for a t4 come tax time to complete the collection, but my favorite is the 85 model. they remind me of a pitbull!!

I have one for sale near Flint, MI

1984 KXT250

I put a KX250 motor in it but the trans went so I swapped the KX stator and flywheel onto the motor it came with and it started on the second kick.
It runs and drives. Only needs minor things like grab bar and front brake cable. But the ones I have on it work. If no one buys it I am going to ride in on the ice this winter.

I prefer the 85. Discs front and rear, awsome power, lots of upgrades available. HREATV makes custom swingarms to use 400EX rearend parts, Sprock Racing makes great bigbore and stroker kits.

I bought an 85 front rim/ hub / disc brake /axle and bought a bunch of parts that was supposed to have 85 forks but they were 84s. So i was going to convert the front end. Then I just missed an ebay auction yesterday for 85 forks for $30 shipped.
