i recently got a 85 ATC 110, the motor would run fine for about 2 minutes then shut down, the guy who gave it to me said it prob needed a new top end, i cleaned the gas tank, put new lines, and rebuilt the carb, still the same problem, so i pulled the motor out.
Now my question is should i rebuild this motor, or go the route of buying a lifan motor like i have heard some people do, i found a guy on ebay that you send your cylinder to and he bores it to fit the new piston he ships you, along with almost everything you need for the topend.
i'm trying to make this run without doing crazy work to it, or modifying the fame and stuff, does anybody have any suggestions?
thank
-Brian.
ps if anyone has parts or knows where to get parts, or these replacement motors from it'd be appreciated/

I had an 83 110 that I put a new piston and rings in all in an afternoon. Its not that hard. The hardest and longest part was getting the motor in and mounting it back. The teardown of the motor and rebuild only took about 30 minutes. A Clymer book is a must and I just got the standard size piston and rings from denniskirk.com. There weren't any major gouges in the cylinder wasll so I didn't even hone it. Before I put it in, the wheeler was hard to start, wouldn't idle, and smoked really bad. After it got warm I would have to let it cool before I could start it agian. Once I put the new piston head and rings in, it would start on the first pull, idle, and wouldn't smoke. It was like a brand new wheeler. I got the piston head, rings, and gaskets for less than $90, which I thought was a good deal.

Smooth, I think you're messing up man. There are so many things that you could have checked before you took your engine out. Did you try running the trike without the gas cap on the engine? Did you try fuel filters in your lines to make sure you weren't taking in any kind of debris? Did you try a new plug? Did you try tuning your carb or setting the timing on your engine? What about trying a different coil? Did you try running with a different CDI setup? I think you're either missing alot of stuff or there was alot of info you weren't telling people. Were you just letting the trike idle or were you trying to give it gas? Do you have the right spark plug? Have you run a compression check on the engine. Have you checked your vavle timing on the engine?

First thing I would of done is run it without the gas cap , they are notorious for going bad. Then do a compression check if it has good compression I would not rebuild it. Also check to make sure the exhaust is not pluged up or internally rusted that it might be restricting in the muffler.
The Lifan will not "bolt in" but can be made to fit

the compression was 123~124 psi, which is low, tried the gas cap before, messed with carb, have a clear in line filter, nothing seemed to work. that's why i pulled it.
does anyone have information on removing the head, i removed the 4 bolts at the top of the head, then the one screw on the side, but can't seem to get it to slide off...
...also does anyone have the pdf. repair manual?
thanks!

If you switch to the lifan, you won't have the two speed hi-lo box.
If you you rebuild the stock motor.......GET A MANUAL

Smooth, you have to pull the ignition and the cam before you pull the head off. Get a manual. Do a search. There was a thread on here about downloading manuals.
