View Full Version : How to tell if my clutch is slipping?

I just installed a 39 pwk carb on my 85R today. I test drove it and it low end feels great but it seems like the top end is not really there anymore. I checked the plug and it showed that I was jetted right. It seems to rev faster, but when I get to the top end it doesn't feel like it pulls as hard as it should.

when you give it gas and the engine reves and the bike dosent jump up on ya.
How does your R stop with the drum? mines an 82 and i have no front brake
i have no componets at all and my fork tube lower caliper bracket is broke.

Get going about 10mph and then upshift 2 or 3 gears. Pull in the clutch, rev it up and dump the clutch. It will spin the tires or bog down but if the clutch slips it will rev up and not do anything much besides rev up. Make sense??

I would say so. Did you try adjust the cable?
The bike takes off then revs to the moon but you don't really achieve any speed cause you are not transferring the power to the rear wheels.
Dammit!

It's a lot easier to tell on pavement. Just be careful.

Maybe my clutch doesn't slip, maybe I will take it for a drive today again before work. It just feels like there is no top end, maybe it is just me though.

I think the drum works just fine. I can lock up the rears on the 81 if needed. The front brake is a huge help on both trikes. When I need to stop right now I use the front brake also, seems to grab way harder (rather than just lock up).

Must be nice to have brakes?!

personally< fire it up, drop it in 4th gear and dump the clutch with the brakes on, if it wants to keep running, it needs replacement. Only an opinion, it is what I have done for years, but never tried on an 250r. Checked my clutch today and it worked. But i do agree, if in third gear you punch it and it still wants to pull a wheelie hard! you should be fine. But you say your jetting is good?

As far as I can tell I am jetted right. I did a plug check the best I could. I can't kill the engine and not have it turn because my clutch doesn't release all the way because the basket has gooves worn in it. If that makes sense.

on my 200e its the same way is great in the lower gears but after like 3rd you give it full gas it just revs up and doest pull anymore have to keep it around 1/2 way just to lazy to change it yet with other projects going on

This may be your entire problem, if the cage has groves, it creates space that should not be there. I would replace the cage

Yeah, I know! mine is $350
ridiculous! but if you find one used, or even a good parts bike.
I know it's different over here, I see those early model 250r's going for really cheap here, like $300-$1000 for a primo hardly used bike. Wish I could help yah out more, but Ebay is all of our friends.

File the gooves out. It'll work fine.

wouldn't that weaken it? I can see it working, but?

Filing is fine for shallow grooving. If the grooves are real deep then dont bother filing, throw it out.
