View Full Version : If you could build any kind of trike you wanted....

what parts would it be made of, and what would you call it?

If I keep getting shitty remarks I am just going to keep deleting the thread and starting a new one.

The "I don't ride" chit is getting seriously played out.

Theres so many things i would like to do, but heres just a few.
DRAG
- Put one of them triple Kawi Airfooler 500's in a Tecate frame
- A bigred, with a polaris triple 800 liquid cooled engine
TRAIL
- First gen R with the Mugen 360 kit and pro link suspension
- Isnt really a custom, but i sure would like to have a TIGER!

Dammit!

I'm boring. I just want to build a decked out 86 R desert trike. I will someday. It'll be expensive to do it the way I want to but it'll be worth it if I ever do get around to it.

I'd build a Tecate with a KX 500 engine, even though it would be a giant pain in my %&* and cost obscene amounts of money and every time you fix one thing, something else is wrong with it because the kid you bought it from was a giant hack and it'll sit in my shed in varying states of completion for months at a time, and- wait a minute, that's already happening-

I call it, "The Headache"

i would build a trike useing stock offset wheels then buy wheel spacers, i would also keep the old 3 lug bolt pattern instead of going to some sweet 250x/300ex/450r hubs (see stock width wheels).

Myself it would be a 86/87 T-3 frame and body with a KFX450 motor. YFZ swinger, and all the aftermarket goodies you could throw at it. Very similar to 250RFAN's 450RR build.

but if I could modify one particular machine I own, the Polaris trike, to HAVE rear brakes in neutral AND move the shifting device from low right side to a position I don't need to remove my hands from the bars, I would not even ride (or probably own) my 250 Bigred.
I reckon my build would be more of a modified Polaris trike.

john

Oh god I am having flash backs of my wife flipping her polaris (87) quad. Front brakes where just a little to weak for the hill. What a stupid ass design! I am in a few weeks going to built a rear brake setup for her quad. When I get a fabed one to work I will post the setup for you to use on the trike. Have to agreee the placement of the shifters is in the worst place... Great 2 stroker though, hauls *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*.

Mine would be a 350x frame with a Honda VTX 1800 :w00t: motor. Stupid and wheelie machine but you only live once.

Does it have to be realistic? Id like a 350x with this bad boy's engine

http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2006/06/19/neander-turbo-diesel-motorcycle/

but because that 100hp 125 ft/lb 1400cc monster prolly wouldnt fit maybe a 1/2 scale replica, with fire rings 2x the boost and bigger injectors/pump :D. Id prolly have dual chains to handle that kinda power lol.

peco250sx
10-07-2008, 06:44 PM
the problem with using old existing trikes is parts are hard to find. i'd chop a raptor and a honda 450 MX bike in half and weld the frames together using the honda engine as it is balenced better. after that upgrades are endless. plus you might be able to weld the other halves together to make an off-road can-am spyder looking thing.

Just out of curiosity why go with the CRF250 and not the 450? The CRF250 is made to compete with a CR125.

The CRF250 can me made to push a ridiculous amount of power for a 250 4 stroke. It's lighter than all hell to boot. When you weigh more than the bike like me, a lighter bike is quite fun. If I wasn't afraid of dying, I'm pretty sure I could bunny hop my 200x into a 360 while moving.

as for the person using the 1400cc engine...the gsxr600 would push a ton more power and weigh about a third.

If I really was dumping money into a bike...

I'd have to go with a honda trx300 modified to accept the largest bore 350x possible, coupled with a ascott 500 headswap. gearing would have to be swapped to a higher grade steel allong with billet alluminum axels. Coupled with a full highlifter kit, modified intake/carb, dual exhaust, and obviously clutch kit. I'd have about 4 times the torque of the stock bike...and 3 times the horsepower...coupled with the ridiculously low gearing, should work well.

speaking of which, about 6 months ago two gsxr600 custom built quads went on ebay for 5700. If I would have had the money, I would have certainly got em.

Its all about the curve, soon as that turbo spools that engine is at max power, so lets be generous and say 3k rpm its spooled and making peak torque all 130 of it and the HP is climbing quick. so first off u cant stall it, and you bet ud be able spin um like *Edited**Edited* on ice in second without touching the clutch or brake. Also diesels are very Hot rodable. Its a DPF engine, (a cat for diesels) so once removed you add a few psi of boost and a few HP instantly, for $0. Diesel blocks r beasts just need alot more fuel supply and double or triple the boost (maybe a bigger turbo). I bet that engine could make 300hp without too much trouble. Hell, IH motors making 250hp out of the box are commonly running in the 2000hp range.

My dream trike would be based off an 86 250R. The frame would be made of 4130 squaretube chromoly and have a removable aluminum subframe. The swingarm would be a plus 2" 450R with a dominator axle. The rear shock would be Ohlins and so would the inverted front forks. The wheels would be some ITP beadlocks anodized blue and a 10 in. front wheel non beadlock. The motor would be an ESR powervalve with a Yukon tranny and Hinson clutch. Pipe would be CT. I'd have a billet aluminum front hub with a common bolt pattern and the offset built into it so I could run a quad front wheel. My plastics would be the stock R plastics but in the old Competition Red (orange). So it would resemble the bikes from the early 80s. That's my dream and totally doable!

WP front forks and rear shock.long travel. 12 inches or so front and rear. linage set up similar to a 250R. desert tank, desert seat, extra wide footpegs. 4130 cromoly axle non tapered with thick splines removeable subframe, alloy air box. pro taper bars, scotts steering damper, stock 350x front wheel and tire. Including all the stuff I've done on my good SX, add the 300cc engine, add two little, round, bright, headlamps where the handlebars curve up, make a front rack for it, fit the 85-87 TRX250 rear plastics and rear rack on, paint the tank blue and apply vinyl to the plastics to make them blue, add blue shock boots, and figure out how to improve the rear suspension.

:w00t:
This is the plan for my other SX!!! All except the 300cc engine for now; I have to wait for the 250cc engine to die first. Which will likely keep running strong forever...
