I got a 125 tri-moto from a friend and got it running today. It just needed a good carb cleaning and started right up. I have never ridden one of these so help me with the shifting. When I pull up on the shifter it goes right into gear and kills cause it wants to start moving right away. If I get it moving first then shift it into gear it's all good. Does this thing have a clutch like a motorcycle or how is it supposed to work? Thanks

It has a clutch, but the clutch is hooked into the shifter. Whenever you move the shifter peg to shift up or down into a gear, it's like you just pulled in the clutch. And when you let your foot off the shifter peg, you have just let out the clutch. Your clutch probably needs adjusted.

Thanks for the reply.
Okay, so when I pull up on the shifter to put it in 1st I need to keep holding it up give it some gas and slowly let it down? Then it'll start moving?

You could do that, and that would work but you should be able to sit in any gear and it should idle. There should be a screw with a jam nut on the right hand side by the clutches. Turn the screw clockwise I believe till you feel tension then back it up a quarter turn then tighten the jam nut. That's how my ytm-200 adjusts. I'd think they are similar.

It definitely won't sit and idle in gear! I'll check the adjustment tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.

If the adjustment doesn't help I would think the spring on the centrifugal auto clutch is broken thus not allowing the shoes to disengage.

hope this helps

On the yt125/175 trikes, there is no centrifugal clutch or centrifugal clutch springs. Just a regular clutch basket set up like on the atc90/110.

Okay, I tried the clutch adjustment with the jam nuts. The only way it would sit and idle in gear is if I tightened it way up but then it was nearly impossible to shift it. I then reset it to just where I could feel the tension on the bolt and left it there because that's how I always adjusted the motorcyles. ( let me know if that's wrong) I drained the case and the fluid was more like gas than oil. I put regular 30w oil in it and it seems better but still wants to take off when I put it in gear, it just doesn't grab as hard. What kind of oil should be in this clutch/transmission case? Is there any other adjustments? Also, how many turns out should the small screw on the carburator be? Thanks

10w-40 is fine. I would ride it a bit maybe it will get better. The adjustment should be fine. no clue on the carb adjustment.
