i need to know if i want to put a 200x front end on my 85' 250sx do i need the same year or will any year fit?

Crap. I was going to do the same thing. Just parted out an '86 200x and thought the forks might be a major improvement on my SX which can't seem to hold fork seals. However, the triples are hideous. Someone took a hammer to them. What would possess someone.....?

nice, cause previous owner totaled the axel and forks from just not servicing them. :(

The forks will slide in the SX triples but then you have to scrap the front dcrum brake and make some spacers to center it. 86/87 200X forks fit too and are about .750 longer in length.
Yes you can run the 85 triples clamps too, but you have to weld steering stops onto your frame or the triples hit your tank and the turning radius is too tight.
Then you have to find a nice 200X front tire/rim and complete brake setup.

thanks everyone ill have to grind off the 250sx steering stop to get it to turn at all and i am still looking for a front rim and tire

Frankencelery, I rebuilt my 86 200X forks over the last few days. I put in the seals & boots tonight, and have the front end almost together. I have the front 86 X wheel just sitting there, and it looks SWEET! I'm waiting for my All-Balls bearing kit to come in from Ebay for the front hub. I just hope I remember to put the spacer tube in before I press in both bearings. I've forgotten many times, and have ruined a few new bearings taking them back out to put the tube in.
I used the 250SX triples, 200X forks, 250SX fender, 250SX headlight, 250SX front axle, 200X front wheel & brake system. To do the conversion, like Dirtcrasher said, you need to add spacers on the outside of the current 200X spacers on the 250SX axle, and add spacers between the forks and caliper mount plate. My axle spacers were .790" Outside diameter, 19/32" Inside diameter, and .790" long. You need 2, one for each side. The brake plate that bolts to the forks needs spaced as well. Those spacers were 5/8" Outside diameter, 21/64" Inside Diameter, and .790" long. You need two of those as well.
You'll also need 2 new M8x1.25 x 65mm flange head bolts to bolt the plate back on. My hardware store only had 70mm long bolts for $1.80 a piece. I ground the length down a little, so the bolts just stick thru the plate about a 1/16th of an inch. It's going to be an awesome setup!!! Just a note, I also added 1.25" long aluminum spacers on top of the springs to take out the sag of the forks on the heavier 250SX. Hopefully I'll have a ride report by this weekend.
I'm pretty stoked about the front disc brake. When I bought the SX back in January, the front drum brakes were unhooked. I never bothered to hook them up because I've been planning this conversion since the day I bought it. I was just lucky enough to find an 86 200X parts donor. I'll let you know how it goes. The only thing I'm thinking about changing is to a stainless braided front brake line.

I took the SX out today with the new 200X front end. It rode pretty well, wheelied easier because it sits higher, and the disc brakes are oh-so nice. It was a lot easier to change over than I expected. Do like my description above, and it's easy to change. Here's some pics.
