Why is it that swingarms from an 81-82 R ONLY fit those two years? What is it EXACTLY that stops say a nice 83-84-85 swingarm from fitting on an 82R?

Is there ANY other swingarms that will fit/interchange with an 82 R?

Not sure what the dif is, but I'm guessing they may have been made thicker and that the angles change, different position on the shock etc...it's all about the evolution of the sport, sometimes a minor change can make a world of difference, especially on pure sport machines like this.

Frame differences and swingarm pivot point measurements. Also different styles of linkage play a part. 81~82 were one frame style and linkage setup, while 83~84 were "2nd gen" and 85~86 yet another completely different style. Hell, even the 85 and 86 are different enough with the same frame that a swinger convert takes most of the rear end to accomplish.

isn't the chain on the other side on newer R's?

Oh well - I've got an 'extra' swingarm on the way. It will be my test mule - me and a friend are gunna extend it 6 inches and see how it affects an 82 R.

Well - 4 or 6 - dunno for sure.

anything can be done with enough time and effort, the question is, is it worth it?

is 6 inches is a little much? I would do 3 or 2. not good on trails.

The 81 is different than the 82 also.

The 81 is different than the 82 also.

how? My dad has had both and are pretty much the same bike in every prospect. The 83r used a modified frame but used the same motor.

He might be talking about the Rear disc instead of drum?

Anyway, i went 5-6+ and handling got better, i know i say that alot, but the swingers on these are so short that a bit longer does really help.It also allowed me to put on a longer shock and now it has better rear suspension...
