Plastic R tank restoration tips?

I've seen several threads on the subject but can't seem to find them right now.

I'm in the final stages of restoring a badly faded 85 R tank. Spent a few relaxing hours scraping and wet sanding so far (yeah I said relaxing... I'm weird). I'm up to 1500 grit so I was looking for tips on getting the shine back. Gonna finish up the sanding with 2000 grit today or tomorrow.

What do you guys use to finish these things up? I've heard of people buffing and using a flame (tried that on a small spot, didn't work out too well for me). What products and techniques are you all using?

I used Mothers Aluminum polish. It came up like new.

I used a razor blade standing on edge.It worked the best at getting the faded plastic off with good results.The rest was a bunch of wet sanding with scotch brite pads.

I'm way past that point. I used the blade out of a utility knife (thicker than a typical razor blade).

When you guys buffed it out, did you do it by hand or with an electric buffer?

If you use a machine the plastic will tend to smear. I,ve never tried one but an orbital polisher might work because they tend to turn a little slower.

You will have to do it by hand. I tried a buffer at first and it did smear. Unfortunatley, if your want a great finish, you will have to do it by hand.

I don't have to use tire shine or armor all on my tank. The polish made it smooth and shine on its own. Good luck and great forearm muscles......
