View Full Version : Newbie here-- 86 Tri-Z Jetting ?

Hey everyone !! :cool: newbie here,,I picked up an 86 Tri-Z few months ago & i've been following this site for a while now,, getting some useful info,, but now i got a little problem with the Z that i cant get fixed,,,,fr idle to 3/4 throttle it pulls hard ,,, but fr there to WOT it starts missing/skipping(just like a Rev limiter) ,,,,,i tried a couple dif carbs with dif jets,, i was running an ol ski-doo carb with 35 pilot & 220 main and just bought a factory Tri-Z carb off ebay and i put a 35 pilot & 320 main jet and works about the same ,,with that WOT miss/skipping !!!?,,,,,, Can n e of u Tri-Z guys tell me what your running for a Main Jet ?? ,, cause i think i may still be running a too large of one ,,

with an '85 Z carb the main is a 480 and an '86 the main is like a 370. Take you plug out and look at it, sounds like your running way lean.

I agree with wheeliepop.....

What year carb are you running?

A 85 carb should be running at least a 460 main.
86 carbs ran leaner.Go back to stock specs for what ever year carb you have,and see what happens.If it was running good,on the origanal carb,than started breaking up on you after a few months,I would suspect electrical.

It sounds to me like either your stator is breaking up,or you have a bad coil.

Hey guys ,, i think it was fr an 85 ,, the main jet was a 470 !!,, i took it out and put a 320 in ( fr my broken factory carb) ,,,, what should i do ,, put the 470 back it ??,,, when i got the carb fr ebay i changed out the 470 before i installed it cause i thought it was way tooo big,,....,guess i should of tryed it before changing them out i guess ,,,,,

I did a quick search and that was what was mensioned. Either way he is way lean

Hey again guys ,, well i put the 420 Main jet in and it ran worst!!:confused: ,, it was making a pop'n sound this time fr 3/4's to WOT,, ,, sooo i put the 320 back it and dropped the needle(raising the clip) and it runs good,, but like last time is cutting out @ WOT ,,, which i can live with ,,, but would be nice to get it to pull fr idle to WOT,,,,...... n e other suggestions ?????

did you ever pull the plug out to see what color it was? Throwing jets at a machine is worthless without knowing how far off the jetting is.

yaa i did ,, with that ol ski-doo carb on with the 220 main jet ,, it was a brownish color ,, with the others its black ,,,,,, but even with the 220 Main jet and a brownish color,, it still cut out @ WOT ?????
