Atc 250r 1981 rear drum removal problem

I got a 250r 1981 and I wanted to replace my rear drum because mine is rusty, incomplete and non-functional. So I got a nice one on ebay. But when I tried to remove the old drum, it was impossible. The spline of the drum seem to be welded by the rust with the rear axle spline.

I try to heat it with a little propane torch. Hit it with a small hammer. No result. I also try to do a force lever with a pry bar and the swing arm. No result. (Yes, I had remove the 2 nuts and the washer)

Any tips or suggestion :confused:

Use map gas if your going to heat it up.

Make sure the cable for the rear brakes is completely loosened up and even go as far to make sure the cable is taken out of the brake actuating arm. Before you do that though, you may want to make sure and apply the rear brakes several times and that all the moving parts are free moving. Sometimes the brake drum is worn down to the point that the brake shoes help hole the brake drum in place. If that doesn't do it, you might want to try and turn the trike more on it's side so when you spray the splined area with all kinds of de-rusting products, that it will hopefully soak down into the splined area better. It doesn't hurt to spray it down with 3 or 4 types of sprays either. Good luck. Remember how old some of these machines are and figure they have been a little neglected over the years.

Update: I finally succeeded to remove the old drum for my 250r. I used a map torch and hammer. But now I got an other problem. When I bought this 3 wheeler, it doesn't get a rear brake pedal. So I finded one on Ebay. The pedal came from a 1982. I know the 82 250r came with a rear disc brake but at first, I doesn't see any problem to fit the 1982 pedal. But yesterday, when i want to install it, I see a litle problem. I take a couple of pics to explain.

So if you take a look to pics, you can see that is like the bracket on the brake pedal isn't in the right place to fit the spring and the brake cable (if I install the spring, the pedal go down). So now, I asked for advice at all 250r 1981 owner to help me. Does I need an other brake pedal ? I never see how it goes originally because when i bought it, he had no rear brake assembly. Any pics or explication is very enjoy.

it could very well be the wrong lever for the year. since the 82s had hydraulic rear discs, that lever is actuating a master cylinder, not pulling on a cable, so id say you need the correct year brake pedal.

The 81/82 brake levers have different part #'s.

I wish I could just cut the bracket and welded to the right place but I have nothing for weld it :cry:
