View Full Version : How much difference does a good silencer make on a 250R?

I'm thinking about changing the silencer on my 85 250R. When I bought the bike it had an FMF full system. The expansion chamber was steel and painted black. The silencer was aluminum. I got rid of the expansion pipe and went with a chrome ATC-5 pipe from ESR. I am extremely happy with it, the power is unbelievable compared to the FMF but I still have the FMF silencer. The FMF silencer is aluminum so I took off the FMF sticker and polished it, so it does look nice. I was thinking of getting the ESR silencer also but wil it make a difference? I'm thinking it might not be worth it but I wanted to check here first. Also do the TRX and ATC take the same silencer?

Different silencers between ATC/TRX, look similar though. As far as power output, probably not a noticeable difference. Plus, the FMF's are big ovals and are fairly quiet when freshly packed. I have two friends that have full ESR systems, and the silencers do tend to make a bit more sound, due to their somewhat small size.
I think they look nicer!!

Not much difference.Sounds a bit different.
The TRX has a different mounting location.

A friend of mine has an 86 TRX250R that he wants to get rid of and it has an ESR full system. I was thinking for trying to trade him silencers but it doesn't sound like that will work. And it sounds like buying a different silencer is not worth it so I will save the money for other things like maybe some OEM fork boots, mine are dirty looking.
