I need to turn this thing around and re-sell it as fast as possible but before I put it on craigslist I need to find out which model it is and what year. What exactly is it? I was thinking 225DX? I'm not very familiar with the Yamahas other than the Z. Does the tenth digit in the VIN code apply to these?

As you can see by the last pic, it's wicked fast. :lol:

Yeah, it's a 225DX, I'm pretty sure. Great pic at the end there! What's the story of you buying it, if you're getting rid of it so fast? Was it a drunk-buy? What did you give for it?

I got two trikes for the price of one and I don't want this one. Selling it to make as much of my money back as possible. Gotta clean it up tomorrow and check the carb out then it goes right back on CL. :lol:

Ok, I went out and looked...mine is an '83 225DX, and it says so on the paper sticker, but the VIN doesn't have a "3" in it anywhere.

Assuming this is the VIN, the number stamped on the front frame tube is: 29U-001748

Does this help?

Mine is 29U-067414.

Anybody know how to tell the year from that?

Does it have reverse. It looks like mine except for the black plastics. Mine is an 83 and has no reverse. I'm probably wrong, but I think the 84's and after 225's had reverse.

Dammit!

I don't see a reverse but it's been messed with a little bit. The controls may be missing. What would I look for on the motor to see if it's there?

I found what I'm pretty sure was a good sized black widow on it a little while ago. Glad it was spotted (and squished) before I started working on it.

Here's the real reason I bought this thing. Package deal. The Yamaha alone is worth the price I paid for the pair of them assuming I can just get it to start up and run somewhat normally. It's got a dead battery and some carb issues. We did it get it fired up before I bought it and it didn't smoke at all and revved up fine.

The 250R needs a lot of work. Supposedly was run lean and needs a top end (mechanic told the guy that so we'll see when I get in there). Brakes work. Shock isn't blown. Has the usual case damage from lack of chain maintenance (tighten your damn chains people! :mad: ). Forks leak. Front end looks crooked in the pic but the fender is loose and not on straight and one fork is sitting about 4mm lower in the triple than the other one. Has a FMF expansion chamber and an Answer silencer. Needs bearings. Overall a nice project bike for sure. Already have plans for it but I need to sell that Yamaha quick to recover what I spent. I am by no means in a position to be buying trikes right now but the potential of a free or nearly free 250R was more than I could resist. :lol:

Here's all I know:

Here's what I found on an ATV website for dating your Yamaha by the VIN number. My stickers are long gone so I used this guide:

Here is the iso standard: "The year code in the Vehicle Identification Number is the 10th position. The key for this 10th digit is given below:

1980=A
1981=B
1982=C
1983=D
1984=E
1985=F
1986=G
1987=H
1988=K
1989=K
1990=L

That confirms it's a 225DXN. I'm thinking it's a 1983 but still not 100% sure yet. The tenth digit trick doesn't work on these.

Went out to mess with it a little while ago and found two more huge blackwidow spiders crawling around on it along with two big egg nests. Gives me the heebie jeebies. I soaked the entire thing down with wisk which I know drowned at least one of them. I lost track of the other. I just hope they stayed on the bike and aren't crawling around my garage now. I got a pic of one but I didn't get a shot of the hourglass on it's belly.

It's not getting gas into the cylinder. Gonna have to pull the carb and see what's going on. I'm almost afriad to look in the airbox after seeing three large black widows already...

Damn, I don't think we have black widows around here but we have brown recluses and I think those are just as bad. I see them in my garage every now and then. They have a violin shape on their head/back.

Sweet deal Doug..I saw that posted aswell. I was gonna go for it but I snagged an 85R a couple days ago for $100, and yes the price does reflect the condition lol. It has been sitting outside uncovered for 9 years! It is complete but very rough. What are the plans for this one?

A hundred bucks? Where did you find that? :lol:

Plans are to get the Yamaha running and hopefully sell it for as much as I paid for the pair or as close as I can get to it. I got it running now (pilot was completely plugged and had to be replaced) but now I can't shut it off. :lol: Somebody replaced the original kill switch with just a starter button thinking they can shut the motor off with the key but it doesn't work. I had to pull the plug wire and got the crap shocked out of me in the process so I have to rig up a kill switch of some kind. Gonna make a new thread for that in a minute. I'm clueless when it comes to wiring.

If I manage to keep the new R it'll get a complete tear down and build up. Already got it planned out in my head but I'm seriously financially stressed right now though so we'll see what happens.

Already got a couple offers on the Yamaha.

I hear that man..I shouldn't be buying trikes either as I'm somewhat out of work still but when something comes along practically free in my head I say "I can't afford not to buy it" lol

I found the 85 on CL in my area. The people didnt even know what the thing was except it was a Honda and had 3 wheels they said, so I took a gamble and went and looked at it. I'll take a pic..I'm draining and replacing all the fluids in it right now but I'm pretty sure it runs. Who knows what the plans are for it, maybe sell it to put money into the other bikes..you know how it goes.

Before tearing into the motor do a quick compression test, if it looks ok its safe to start it up..you might get lucky.

Somebody is offering me a "brand new" Coolster 110cc pit bike for it. I don't anything about pit bikes. Sound like a fair trade? Any idea what I can get for one? There's one on CL for $650 but that doesn't mean much.

Yeah it's actually a fun little trike. If I weren't in the $$$ situation I'm in I'd probably keep it and fix it up a bit. Runs real strong. Needs more fine tuning but lots of potential there.

From the vid, it looks pretty fast! I think mine is the snappiest of my trikes. Mine also has the advantage of being spider-free!

29U-001748 is not a vin number. It should be 15+digits long. Find it and post it, I can tell you the year from it.

my fuel delivery problem was the petcock. But do not spend the big dollars on one for a 225. Save half the cost and install one for a banshee. That is what I did.

Good to know. This one appears to be good though. Looks a little ugly but it doesn't leak and flows freely.

I don't plan on spending any more money on it at all if I can manage it. The couple bucks I had to spend on a new pilot jet is plenty. :lol:
