How long does your average air cooled honda engine last for I was wondering this as a mate of mine says his mates XR250 would last for 200hours of riding. When the time does come for my ATC200 to need a rebuild I will probably just buy an XR200 engine for it. So how long do they last before they quit?

they last until they don't run... Honestly a honda 200 engine is the last thing I would think of rebuilding. These things are amazing they have been running since they rolled off the line. Key thing is if it has good compression keep the oil level where it should be and ride it.

my 85 350x motor still has the original bottom end and is still on the stock bore.
that motor was in a few different quads over the years and the rod does have a smig of play in it but i cant complain.
200 hours is a joke

If you change the oil and filter (if your motor has one), these older 4 strokes can easily last years and hundreds if not thousands of hours in stock form.
Honda built a hell of a reliable thumper for as long as I can remember........
It's the low oil level, dirty air filter and lack of oil changes that kill these motors.

Dads old XL200 *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* itself while i was riding it he sold it for $1 reserve and he got $450 for it which is bloody good since it had a buggered motor and a broken con rod. But the people who bought if off him told him that one of the previous owners removed something(I forgot what it was) that stopped the oil from properly going around the engine or something. But the weird thing is when i tried and pushstart it I could hear the motor turn over but the kickstarter was light to kick over but it had a decompression set up on it.
So if what you guys are saying is that I should have years more out of my 200S? Sounds good.

mine was all original till this year when we put new rings a piston and a crank seal in it but my dads 84 big red is still all original except for the head gasket and he rode that thing hard for years until he got the Polaris 4x4  like 4 years ago.

Would my 200S have an oil filter? I know my dads XL250 has one as you can see the bulge in the motor but mine doesnt have the bulge on the engine.

Dude, I've said it before- Honda is japanese for reliable. If you change the oil, it will be here long after you.

I bought my 85 BR new and it is still going strong. Nothing has been done to the motor except changing the oil and filter two or three times a year.

Honda generators will run easily 4000+ hours with proper maintenance...and that's running WOP non stop! Don't worry about it conking out...the odds are that it won't :D

Heres something I never understood (may sound like a stupid question but Ive been wondering for ages) how come with high performance bikes (ATC250R CRF250R etc.) you have to change the piston regularly but with an engine like an ATC200 you dont?

i think its because of the higher stress and finer tolerances, things like reliability and durability are sacrificed for performance and response. things are lighter and in turn weaker, as well as the fact that many race bikes are pushed to the limits of what the engine can take. but im sure there is a better explination than mine

2-strokes also run more cycles then a 4-stroke engine, thus wear out faster. In the case of a CRF, most people (that race atleast) are running the engine HARD thus wearing stuff out more, a 200S isnt' going to spin up to 12.5k RPM like a CRF... Although my 200s does like to run hard... Not at the moment though with a broken exhaust stud :(

2 strokes can last quite a long time without needing rebuilt. just depends on how you use it.
leaf blowers, weed whackers, and chainsaws are at WOT all the time, and they run forever. ive heard of people running their 250R's for 15+ years before rebuilding.
these new 4 strokes die fast because they shave so much outta the motor to make it light that it makes things weak. combine that with high revving and high compression, and short stroke/rod, and you have a time bomb.

But chainsaws probably wouldnt be high performance. You dont need to do regular rebuilds on YTM125/175 and theyre 2 stroke
