View Full Version : Looking for information on 82-83 250R
I might have a line on a 82 or 83 250 R - so I'm looking for as much info on them as possible.
Links?
Quick question - can the swingarm be extended on these year of bikes?

The years go from 81-82 then 83-84. So it would be two different styles of trikes if it was between 82 or 83. Either way they are both air cooled. I have an 81R, it doesn't have as much of a suspension as the 83 on up R's. I have seen people make their own extended swing arms for the 81-82. I don't think they make and aftermarket one. I am not sure about extended axles either. If they don't make them you could always use wheel spacers. Also the 81-82 use a two piece rim design, but I have read that you can install the hubs and rims off of something like a 350X to convert to a one piece rim.

Also the 81 has front disc brakes and rear drum, and the 82 has front and rear disc brakes.
Here is a couple pics of my 81R

Looks like the bike is an 81 or 82 comparing it to your pics.
Hmmm .... now, to buy or not to buy? I wanna go really low with this project and have a really extended swingarm - now I'm not to sure if this is gunna be even possible?

You can put on hubs from a 300ex/400ex to make it a 4 bolt(which i havent done yet lol) And i extended the swinger on mine about 6+ and it improved handleling and made it less tippy..also put a front sled shock on the back..5X better than stock.

Thank you! Now that helps sway me in the 'buy' state of mind. I'm betting a set of low profile tires on back would bring her quite a bit lower to the ground also.
I might just go for it cause I am not having any luck finding an 84-86 R here in Canada - at all!

How much if you dont mind me asking? There quick machines, accelerate like hell. I love mine. And ya some lower profiles will help, extended swinger, you can slide the forks up to lower the front also.

Do you know what shock you used and from what sled it came off of?

I bet you can get him to come down even more. I would still grab it for $250.

The shock came off a 2005 Polaris Classic 550. I used it because it was long enough to compensate for the longer swingarm.

I 'might' be able to score the bike for 100.

I would say it is worth that if it runs. How much of the original parts are still there? Can you get pics?

Also one thing to check out is the seat pan. They were still metal on the 81-82R's. Mine is rusted to the point where it isn't worth it to try to fix. That is the reason the seat looks like it does in the pics. I am having a tough time finding a good one for a decent price.
I haven't been able to get a really good look at the bike - as far as I know most of it is original but the rear fenders might not be.
It's also bored over quite a bit I'm told.
We'll see soon enough.

Wanna sell it :D . I would like to find a place to make some plastic ones someday. I wonder if Maier would do that? Or isn't there someone on this board that has a hook up with a plastic company? MrsMosh or something like that?

Also Yamatrike400 what are you running for a rear sprocket? The stock style has rubber bushings and I hammer those out in a weeks worth or riding.

I have the stock one, and yah those rubber bushings are worn pretty bad. The actual hub that holds the sprocket is twisted and broken super bad from torque..

My hub still lock ok from what I can see. I did put a new sprocket on three years ago when I rebuilt the bike. But it is shot already.
