ok i recently bought a 84 250R. it did not come with a carb, head, reeds or cylender. i need to know if the carb's off a 82 or an 83 would be the same, same thing with the reeds and the hed/cylender combo. a couple people have told me that these are not reliable bikes and that they blow easily (for a two stroke) i have also heard that the 82 and 83 cylenders and carbs arnt as good. any info will help.

Your information regarding the Air-cooled R's reliability is just plain wrong. They are/were just as, if not more reliable than the liquid cooled models for the sheer fact that they are a much simpler design and have less compression. '84R's had a little bit higher compression (7.3-1)than the other three years (6.6-1/81-82 & 6.7-1/'83), so they may be a little more "high strung" but I wouldnt say that makes them any less reliable. Anyway, I've always lived by the "Proper maintenence keeps things moving" principal. The jugs are interchangable but '84's had revised port timing from the factory and a little more "squish" (probably from a thinner head gasket, but thats just a guess) over the earlier models so unless you dont care about a little better flowing head they all should work. The 30mm PE30A carbs on the second generation R's were a bit larger than the 27mm PE23A's on the '81/2's. I'm pretty sure the intake bell is slightly larger too, so a direct bolt up would be tough. The reeds are the same for all years of the 250/350 (oddysey) class ATV 2 stroke Honda motors. I had a Boyesen Rad valve on my '82 R - but - there is some question as to weather it is made anymore or if it was from an MX bike. It bolted right up though. My suggestion would be to get any year jug you can (if its red, paint it black), buy an overbore Wiesco, and take the jug and piston to a shop and have them clean up the bore and port it to match the pistons ports.

That just about sums it up Wicked finger. I take you a big fan on the aircooled R's?

i've had a few 83 and 84 250r's. i have used 81 and 82 cylinders and heads on them before and had no problem with them. they are reliable but they are also around 20 years old and hardly anybody that i know of around here takes care of them. they have been abused and neglected so they probably are not reliable. an aircooled 250r in good shape will still hold it's own against just about anything off the showroom floor. :)
