WOOOOOO!!!!!! Got me an 87' Tecate

I just picked this up. I got it while I was under the impression it was an 86. But come to find out, its an 87! That was a nice surprise. Its complete except for a few things like a headlight shroud and keyed ignition. Plastics are a little beat but all there and very useable. Frame was painted green and the motor blue. Not my color of choice but I can just change that. Engine is fairly solid. It has a great spark and tons of compresion. Has a powervalve issue though. Came with an extra bottom end and cylinder. All in all, I think I got a decent deal. 2nd gen T3s are rare around my neck of the woods. I'm not sure what to do with it yet. I kind of want to restore it but i also want to ride it.... I was thinking of maybe restoring it but not doing it all origional. We'll see when the time comes. I wont get to it until this winter anyway.

Congrats, that's a good looking bike. I've never seen one in person, looks to be in great shape. What color is the frame supposed to be? I like the green frame, looks a little more modern.

I would personally forget about the hard to finds and spend the money on making a nice rider out of it. Ride it til it breaks and then do a full aftermarket resto on it with tons of hopups and fresh green fenders and sticks.....

Deepa was riding his 86 this weekend all day on the trails and it ran like a champ...

I bet they didn't know about the reverse thread on the powervalve actuator. i bet they went the wrong way and broke it off. Do some research on the powervalves before you tear into it.
i see it still has the 87 rear caliper too, 350X pads w/ a parking brake.
Search for my 87 build to see some of the custom parts i have come up w/.

Nice bike, I would fix the powervalve issue and do some good riding before a rebuild. Once I took my 86 topend apart I seen the powervalve is real simple.

I traded an 85' Tri-Z for it. Its the one in the sig actually. It needed a bit of work but ran and rode well. I figured it was a pretty good deal since I probably wont find another one for a while. Tri-Zs are fairly common up. I can find another one easily. 87' T3, not so easy.....

As far as fixing it or restoring it...Im probably going to just get it ride worthy and ride it around while I aquire the parts. Its mostly complete so i dont have to worry about locating rare parts (except the Keyed ignition, but that can wait). So its just maintanece and tune up stuff like bearings, etc. Most of the work it needs is just cosmetic. And thats fixed by new plastic, decals, and refinishing.

I actually have a few questions. I need a shock rebuild. Where is the best place to do that? Also, does anyone still make aftermarket wheels fo them? Im sure I can find rear wheels with the same bolt pattern but what about the front? Also, what is the stock carb for these?

Stock carb is a mikuni 34, dont think you can get a new front rim.. An 85 tri z for that is a good deal. Huge power difference too. Atleast from my bikes, but I think my tecate was ported. Rebuilding somthing like this, you keep getting pulled in and want to get it as nice as possible. I know where to stop though for my build. Mine is a rider.

You can put like a 300ex or Raptor shock on there. I think the front rim is the same as 350x, 200x, ect 4 on 170 bolt pattern. Rear rims are 4/156.
