Well, durring the build-up of my all new TRI-Z, I installed the ALL BALLS head tube tapered bearing kit. I thought all was good until I tried to install my headlight assy. The tripple trees are a little less than a 1/4" farther apart W/the new bearings, so the headlight assy won't bolt up. It's not a huge deal to do a bit of welding to make it work, but of course it has already been painted!! I was just curiouse if anyone else had this problem, and what you did to fix it. I have checked to make sure the bearing races are seated all the way in the head-tube, and that the lower bearing is fully seated on the tripple, so I don't think it is something I did. thanx guys.

I will second his issue with this. I had the same problem when doing my old Z.

I have never used that kit. Thanks for the heads up on them.
The factory set-up always worked fine for me,and the stuff was avalaible for under 30-40 bucks. That was 2-3 years ago though.

Has someone mentioned this to Mr Balls? I'm sure they haven't a clue that it's a problem. I got all new stuff from the dealer just last fall OEM. It lasted 20 yrs so I figured thats good enough for me.

it might be a dumb question but did you remove the piece that the little balls roll around on before you installed the bearing race? i took mine out and it looks like the upper race still sticks out a little bit when you install it. later

yup we both removed the race before installing the new bearings. He had an 85 1/2 and I had an 85 iam not sure if the 86 has a taller neck than those years and maybe they sent us both the wrong year but that a long shot
