I've got an '80 110 Honda ATC that currently has points. I was thinking about replacing it with the CDI unit from an '81. Will it work? If I replace the CDI unit, the wiring CDI plastic box under the seat and the coil, will that be it? Does it need something in the recoil started? Should I just replace the points? Is it worth the advantage to have the CDI?
Thanks,
RJ

The points are a simple system and the points and condenser should be less than $20 to buy and a few minutes to replace and gap the point. To get the CDI set up, if you don't have another trike to get it from may cost you quite a bit. You would need the wiring harness and the cdi box. I can't remember if the headlight and headlight switches are different from those years, but I believe they are. Also you would need all the CDI parts off the head. I con't know if the stators and rotors are the same or not, you would have to look that one up. An electronic parts being the way they are, you might be buying a messed up wiring harness or a bad cdi box or cdi parts which means that you could possibly end up having to buy new some of the parts that you just bought used. The least expensive of the 2 is just buy new points and condenser and run what you have. If the cdi is a must have, then have at it and take your time and do some research. You could probably get all the info you need from the 110 shop manuals and cross referencing parts and such on the different microfiches. I would spend a couple hours researching before I thought of buying parts though just in case. I don't really see the advantages of cdi except that you won't have to regap it, but as far as replacement costs, points and condenser are way cheaper than a cdi box or cdi parts and used cdi parts are probably at least 23 years old where you can get brand new points and condenser for quite a bit less and it is much easier and cheaper to carry around an extra set of points and condenser than it is to carry around extra cdi parts.
