I picked up these two 110s this past weekend. One is complete, the other mostly complete without the carb, points cover and air box.

The '81 that was complete, I was able to get running, but it smokes pretty bad. Also, it will need a carb rebuild/new carb as it won't idle. Wondering what I should do? I want it to be a pretty budget friendly restore, but want to get some power increases on it if I can. Want to keep it under $200. Just ordered the Clymer manual, and I have some tinkering experience, but not a ton.

Should I just rebuild the top half of the engine? Should I go with a 125 top end? Should I buy the kit from ebay? or just piece together a kit from dratv.com and have a machine shop bore out the head for the bigger cylinder? How much is too much boring out?

I appreciate any help and any ideas. Thanks,
RJ

I'm a purist... so personally, I wouldn't mess around with the 125 top end/cylinder. Plus not sure as the later 125 had an electronic CDI instead of the early points and condenser. Anyhow... I love the 1980 with the old school round HL... looks like it has a aftermarket bracket on the front axle to lengthen the stance. Sweet. Keep that 80 together... not many of the older ones in that shape.

The '81 has the cdi, the '80 has the points. The '80 does have the fork extenders...gives it a higher stance. I guess keeping it stock will probably be the easiest and the cheapest.

How much do I have the machine shop bore out the head?

The head does not get bored out, the cylinder does. I don't know if you can bore a 110 cylinder out to make it into a 125. The 125 cylinder does not bolt up, you would need to have the cases bored out because the sleave is bigger (or so I have heard several times).
