I got a message from one of the guys I used to race with. His Mom has "some mid-eighties death trap" on her ranch she needs to get rid of. All he could tell me that it is shaft drive. What models were shaft drives?

Big Red
250 SX
yamaha 225

what else?

I'm leaving the house as soon as my 6 and 8 year old boys wake up. I'll have a photo as soon as I get home :D

The price is right. Hope you can fix it up. Wish you lived closer to me here in southern Idaho. We could ride together.

the kawasaki klt160 and klt185 were also shaft driven but pretty rare so i would bet more on a 250sx or big red

I bet anything it's the Yamaha...they had shaft on the seat org. style yellow or blue.

it is a Yamaha :D It has reverse as well, so that makes it a 225 DX right?

it is stuck in gear right now. I'm headed back to the garage to get the pressure washer out. It last ran 5 years ago. Just a project right?

I got it washed. It is alot bluer now :D Carb is in dip right now, we will see if it will start.

So far it needs:
reverse lever
Battery
pull handle
fuel line
spark bolt
carb clean
fluids changed
fresh gas.

the grab bar is hosed. the rear corners of the frame measure the same.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding a vin chart to determine the year. It is jy31ev004f0006011. If anyone could help me out, that would be great.

VIN comes back as a 1985 Yamaha YTM225

Needs a lot of work but even butt ugly trikes are diamonds in the rough. I had a YTM200EK (thing there was a k??) and that thing would run forever no matter what I did too it. Great score!

maggiesboy, thats a 225 dr!!! dr- reverse, dx no reverse. that plastic may clean up nice. check the area where the footpegs bolt to the frame. it is common for the mounts on the frame to rust out.

LOL don't sell them short. They use to call mine the "yellow submarine" It would go up to the gas tank in water and not whimper. My buddies Big Red would die as soon as water hit the spark plug! Yamaha's were not too shabby! :D

I had one kinda like that. I sold it to a friend on a promise. He was suppose to fix it and go riding with me. It never happened. I didn't get the $100.00 or a riding buddy.

cool. when i got mine i new nothing of this and got it running and rode. about 2 months into a hard riding season and about 15 miles from home my right footpeg broke off. i later noticed that the left had been welded before i got it.
wheelies are fun on them. i could bring mine up in 2nd and easily run into 5th. i always seemed to run out of torque when i got into high gear though.

I had to go to the dealer and buy a petcock for it. The old petcock was just trickling fuel and the trike would die out. I'll post more this weekend.

I sat out in the sun this morning with the garden hose and a 400 grit sanding sponge and tackled the fenders. WOW a major improvement for sure. I still have more to do on it, I'll get some pictures up when I get home.

What's this about 400 grit sanding sponge and water?

if you look at the pictures, some bright person spray painted it black. I got a sanding sponge from the local harware store.(sponge allows to sand around the different curves of the body work) I basically wetsanded the plastics to make an attempt at saving them instead of tossing them in the trash. I'm gonna get real hillbilly style after they are all sanded and give them a coat of mop and glo for a shinny finish.

The seat is headed to the wonderful folks at Cosmic Quads for some seat luvin' too. I can't have too many beaters in the garage :D

Hey, I just got one of these too! I totally agree with you about the wheelies. My SX was the best I had for wheelies until now, but this thing just loves to point to the sky!

On mine, the clutch doesn't seem to dig in until the RPM's are up a little higher. I couldn't tell if it was just normal for this trike or it was misadjusted. Sure doesn't feel like a Honda! Maggiesboy, is yours that way?

I'm going to have to check the frame for rust around the pegs. One of my pegs broke off last year while jumping my SX, causing some bodily injury! Fortunately it was the trike's body, not mine, and also fortunate that I was only a jumping about a foot in the air!

the clutch on mine does engage at a higher RPM.

My Dad and I have made the deal of a lifetime for the both of us :D He is trading me this trike for his 98 CR500 :w00t:

His 58 youthful years is catching him quick with the 500, the 225 will be tip top for him in a couple of weeks :D
