I have a 1986 Tri-Z and I've only ridden two times since bought. The first time the clutch was a little garbing at first then it worked fine. I rode it today and at first the clutch would not work, I put it in gear and it died just as if the clutch was not pulled in. Just cause I got a rolling start and put it in gear after about five mins. the clutch worked fine. I have put new oil in it Gear Saver 85 wt. don't know what was to in before. Please Help!!!!!

More than likely your basket is badly grooved. This prevents plates from fully disengaging from each other. Even though pressure plate has been forced out by pulling lever. The frictions can't 'float' on basket ears like they are supposed to when pressure is released. Instead, they hang up in the grooves and friction still exists between steels on inner hub and "hanging" fibers on basket.

I agree with tecat-z. You'll need to disassemble the clutch and file the grooves smooth on the clutch basket ears.

My 85 Z did that after it sat for days. When I tried to drop it in gear,Sometimes it stalled.I would start it in gear,Then ride it for a few minutes and it would be fine for until it sat for days again. It never gave me any problems, just a little annoying.

My basket was decent, and what I figured out was,My trans, suffered a water pump seal failure About a year earlier,I reused my clutch plates when I fixed the seal, and some antifreeze got embedded in the clutch fibers. That caused them to stick when cold.

It could be your basket is grooved, but if you know your oil came out really black(clutch overheating), or milky(pump seal failure),you may need to replce that seal and the clutch plates.

If your basket is grooved, and it is in your budget to replace it,You may want to check out these new billet baskets that have been made.

here is a link to them.

That has to be it!! When I got it, I changed the oil and it was milky and I found that they had the radiator over flow hose going to the top of the overflow bottle and at the bottom a hose going to the crank case so every time the radiator overflowed it went into the crank case:crazy: . I should have known not to buy from a guy with all hondas:lol: I e-mailed that guy about the clutch baskets I would feel better if i went and replaced all of the clutch. Thank You guys I really dig this site none of my buddies or anyone at the shops can't ever tell me nothing about 3 wheelers cause they can't ride them....:naughty:
