I made 200 miles to pick this 1984 ytm-225 dx saturday morning. It need of lot care. It needs:
Rear axle bearing
Lighting coil
Brakes pads and cables all around
Shift shaft
Shift lever
Probably a lot a others things
Notice on the pic the 20 inch radial tires.
I bought it as a non-runner but this afternoon I have been able to start it and drive it in the driveway ( under the rain  )

Edit: Look like the rear wheel are off a quad, the bolt pattern is something like 4/110 (3,25 inches between stud) and the offset is 4/5:naughty:

I need your help on this one.
The rear wheel and hub are not the stock unit. The hubs fits nice on the axle and the bolt pattern is 4/115. The diameter of the wheels are 9 inch by 9 inch wide. And the offset is 4+5. Anyone know what these wheels are off? Also they are spray painted gold.

i think the raptor 350 and yzf450 use the 4 on 115 pattern.. are the rims steel?

This pics is from the classified. Don't worry, it is very hot here.
A lot of parts interchange from a YTM-200E.
I think the rims are steel, I'll have to take my magnet to be sure. The center of the wheel seems to be made in 3 layers.
Look like I will have to look for raptor or yfz rims to put snow4 on this trike.

Yesterday I salvaged the yfm 225 I bought. Removed the pullstarter, the centrifucal clutch, one-way bearing, shift shaft, clutch cover spacer ( the last owner of my 225dx thought it was a good idea to drill this spacer instead of removing a broken bolt) and the complete rear brake to put on my 225dx.

This afternoon I started installing the parts in the right engine side. The only problem I had was to remove the dowel pins in the crank case and removing the old shift shaft. Finished at 8:30pm just in time to do a roll test.:naughty:
I now have a shifter:D
There was fresh powdery snow in the driveway:) but I still have the bald knobby in front:( so it was hard to turn. Next thing on my list: buy a new front tire.

I need a agressive front tire, because the Zipper in the rear really push forward in the corner. Here a picture of the K530 Pathfinder front tire. This tire is available in 22x11-8. If anyone have others suggestions please tell me.

Finally I choose to put a Kenda Front Max in front. Put it yesterday's night. Had to wrestle with it on the floor for a good 45 min, put after the 10th round I finally got it to bead on the rim. Funny part is that it took me only 1 minute to install it on the rim.
Here a picture.
Did a short ride test just after and I think I will have fun with this tire. I was riding in 8-9 inch on snow in the driveway and the front goes where it pointed it.

Those original rear tires that where on there came off of a z400 and I think they where on lt230quadsport rims.

I need to put a new seat cover on the trike and I thought it would be a good idea to change the color of it.
What color will look good for you.
Red
Blue
Black (stock)
Yellow
Others????

I'll also look to put more foam to raise the seat height. I'm 6'2'' and I feel a little cramped on it, I'm always sitting on the rear end of the seat.

Since the last post I put:
New seat cover
Painted my home made grab bar red
Changed the fuel petcock
Removed the front fender extension
Put a ton of new stickers :acr :D
Completely removed the front end to grease the steering stem bearings.

Here are the pictures.:pics:

I like my grab bar. It is really easy to lift the trike when I get stuck. And the trike is still able to sit vertical on it.
The tire is a Kenda Front Max A/T 22x11-8

You should clean the floor where you painted.:p
Less shiny then the original but a lot better.

Thats a nice looking trike, why are you calling it a basket case?

Look at the picture in the first post. When I got it the plastic were oxydixed(spelling?), it wasn't running, the springs of the centrifucal clutch were loose in the cover, the left side pegs was and is still welded to the frame etc.

But has long has it run I'm happy with it.

Still have to replace the lightning coil (dealer want $100 for a new one), grips, taillight (probably buy a new one from a blaster or tri-z), headlight bulb and some others small things.

Let's start about the facts about my ytm-225 electrical system.
- It got spark
- It run great
- The lights never worked
- The lighting coil was toasted
- I don't want to run a battery
- I don't care for a electric starter

With that in mind can someone tell my if I plug a wire at the lightning and route it to the dimmer switch, will my lights works? After thinking about it, maybe where the R/Y yellow split and goes to the rectifier with regulator and the other end goes to the dimmer switch, can the rectifer draw the extra voltage from this connection so the lightning coil don't blow the lights? I have the rectifier so I should not be a problem to plug it in the harness. Please take a look at my attachment and tell me if I'm right.

I think that If you run without a battery it will toast the stator. thats what I was told when I was running my 1986 YFM 225 without a battery.

I don't think it will cause a problem. My 1984 YTM-200E have been running without a battery for more than 10 years and the lights are still working. Or maybe I'm just lucky...

The YTM-225 wasn't running since the end of the winter but tonight I but the stator back on it and started it. I missed it. :trikesowns:

Looks great. Where did you get the seat cover?

Yamada

I took my seat to an upholstery shop in town. They put a new slice of foam over the old foam ( I wanted it thicker because I'm tall) and new vinyl. Any upholstery near you should be able to do it for you. I asked for a red cover but it was $20 more bacause he had to order the vinyl.
