thanks for the comments guys. i love to pull these old bikes from the weeds and bring em back to life. i have no before pics but it has certainly come a long way.
chris, my plan is to have it runable for pennsyltucky. i really need to find a seat though. i have most of what i need to finish other than a few engine internals.
thanks irvsled, the aluminium piece i made as a number plate. if also mounts the 200x front fender. it will be getting screened in the center and i'll be painting it red along with the fuel tank.
brapp, i cant wait to bring her down and run it on the track! it would be awesome if you found 1 to do up. these things are cheap and everywhere. so far i have less then $50.00 into it. when done i hope to have no more than $500.00 invested. what im lacking now is a seat, cam chain guides, cam chain, and some gaskets. i'll also be runnin a clamp on filter since it did not have an airbox when i got it.

wantin to update here. just got me 2 pipes off ebay. :w00t: a pk racing and a full dg. not sure what to use, any opinions?
Vealmonkey
07-12-2008, 04:13 PM
That PK Racing pipe will be much better than the DG. DG is better than stock and cobra, but that PK pipe should rock. Did you find a stroker kit for it yet??? You need some suspension! I know fun budget build, but the suspension kits rock. Also, a nice 200x pipe is a real good mod for the 185s/200s series of tries. I do have a soft spot for supertrapp or bassani, but there were other brands that rocked too, just that they are few and far between. Curtiss Sparks, Hooker, White Brother, Kerker and your PK are just a couple of the Bigger names that made really nice pipes and there were several small places that made really trick custom pipes, but you rarely if ever find those and most of those places were out on the left coast.
trizilla
07-12-2008, 07:12 PM
veal, i agree... the pk is the way to go. i'll just stash the dg for a future project. i bought both pipes for less than the cost of a new dg!!!! no stroker yet, but im thinking long rod... any ideas?

the machien sho[ i used to do the ehad work on both my 185 and 200 cc heads does the best jop I've ever seen. www.theoldone.com they do awesome work. CNC valve seat work, and CNC valve job. Some minor porting around the bottom of the seat area is all these head need as they already have larger than needed port sizes.
anyway, talk to them if you want that extra performance. they also can get web cams and springs and such. i think the charge like $165 for the base vavle job (you supply the top end kit) and then it goes up from there if you add parts. my head cost me about $550-$600 due to the web stage3 cam and springs and retainers+ hardened rockers needed as well, then their was the extra seat work i had done too. but she sure runs awesome and responds very well!

So the bike sits about 4-5" taller overall. I had a 185 that had a 83/84 250r front end on, I really liked the height but I wish the back couldve been taller to match it. I think this one would sit pretty close, I bet its gonna be a blast to ride!!

the suspension is pretty soft right now. im gonna change the fork oil and go with a heavier weight in them. i also have another set of tripples that will eventually go on it. there's a pic of them earlier in the thread, they are aluminium and a lillte wider than the steel ones that are on it now.

why not a 200x front forks and frame?
I'd take a nice suspended 185s over two 83/85 200X's but that's just me. I don't care if a 200x handles and rides better, the suspended 185s is way cooler to me. If I want something that handles better I'll ride my 250R.

Eric, Why did you mount that front fender so high. There are mounts on the lower legs that the fender should be attached to. It's looking really good. Man, do I like the old school stuff. These were the trikes before the 200x and some even say the 200x was based on. I'm not sure if that is the original shock for that trike and I really wouldn't have any way to know. If you think the trike sits too high, see about a slightly shorter rear shock. Also the front fork tubes will slide up into those triples some. It really depends on what you want to do. But try mounting that fender on the tabs on the lower legs, it should look even better. And I'm not sure if any of my other suspension 185s have those tabs, so you have one up on me. I have to get some sheet aluminum now and make me a couple tabs. Looking good though. Do you think you can get those wheels cleaned up or are they for the 110? And if you notice, all the wheel halves have the hole drilled in them for the fill valves. You just have to run dual front air valves.
trizilla
12-27-2008, 10:58 PM
pat, i've had the fender that came with it mounted in the plates. i like it better mounted up against the lower tree, but look closely at the pic, its held in place. if i dont use the plates i'll save them for ya. not sure about the shock but the swinger has some marks from the chain. right now i want to get it running then i'll start playing with the suspension. im not sure where im gonna use the wheels but probably the what ever gets the trees.

is there a kit to make a suspended 185.i have two 185's and a bunch of 200x parts,swingarm and shock,front forks,etc.could i use that to make a suspended 185.
Vealmonkey
12-28-2008, 12:35 AM
There were kits at one time and they were very popular. Besides kits, there were entire aftermarket frames, some were even chromoly and very light and sturdy. But it is rare to find them nowadays. The one trizilla has he got from me and I have 1 other weld on suspension 185s that I'm going to cut loose. I have a bolt on suspension 185s, that is extremely rare that I'll never part with, or won't part with for quite a long time though. Good luck on finding a suspension 185s kit or already converted frame, which is what you usually find if you find one. A suspension 185s is not near as nice as a 200x, but it is tons cooler and how many do you see. About the only normal trike I own is a 350x. The next normal trike I have would be probably the 250 Tiger and then the 500 Tiger. Everything else I have is kitted and very uncommon to say the least. I like the odd stuff and have a tendency to buy the odd parts. The crazier, the better. I have some things on here 99.5% of the people have never seen. Call me crazy. I don't want what everyone else has. The 200x, the 250r, I remember when those came out and hit the dealership floors brand new. But those weren't the trikes alot of people had. I saw some crazy stuff on the east coast and it didn't even compare to what the west coasters had. I remember when the only trikes that ran were 90s and 110s, before the 185 and 250r even came out. That's the kind of stuff I like. If I could find a warehouse full of it, I would remortgage my house to get it! That's how crazy I am about the old stuff.

For the 185s I have nice OE fenders and seat, plastic tank and I just have a 200x front end I'm going to use, that's all I've got. I am also thinking about trying to get a XL185 motor from my brother for mine, not sure yet. I don't have exhaust yet either, I love the look of the fat front tire on yours. Great job.

I can tell you that they don't compare to a 200x. Less travel in the suspension and the front end is a tad heavier. They aren't meant to replace the 200x. This is what was out before a 200x. When these first ran around, there was no 200x's and they are a big stretch better than a hard tail. The hardtail frames are a bit heavy, but... it doesn't get any cooler. People will look and wonder what the heck you are riding, because it looks like nothing that is around any moore. And alot of these ended up with aftermarket fiberglass fenders and wacky paint jobs. They were the hot rods of their time. Of course, it all changed when the 200x came out. And about the same time these were hitting places, companies were starting to come out with the suspension hybrids. You have to remember before these suspension kits, most everything was hardtail. Imagine a hardtial powered cb750 trike or hardtail rd350 powered trike or even a hardtail 2 stroke 750 triple trike! They were mostly dune shooters though. When the suspension trikes started hitting, well pretty much anyone could ride them anywhere. Even on the East Coast. And people started buying them up. I'm glad you and Wendy are enjoying the trike. I have the other one if you are interested. LOL I'll have to bring mine up.
