View Full Version : what is a good size for rear tires?

i have some 22" tires and my 86 tecate, and i was thinking about putting some smaller ones on for better performance. i think it came stock with 20s, but wondering if anyone is running 18s with good sucess. i have 14-42 gearing. i'm still dialing in my jetting, but i know i was lean off the pilot and rich on the main. the bike just didn't seem to have any low end. my buddies quad racer with 20s had way better low end. once i hit the power band i would walk on him, but i really think i'm losing alot with the 22x11.5x10 rears that i have on. also if anyone knows of a good rear tire for my trike and a place to get it at a good price let me know. new to the whole thing.

it depends on who you ask..... i never run anything but 18s even in the woods

do you think the tires and jetting being off are my cause of no low end. i mean this thing has nothing until the power ban kicks in.

I run 18" on the Z and 20" on the X. If you want ground clearance and want to stay with 22" tires concider regearing, plus its cheaper

i don't think there is too many gears made for the t3. i might be wrong. i do have a rear and a 37 rear.

20's are good trail tires, 18's you loose some clearance, but are still a good size. i run 18's and havent really had any bad problems when out in the woods or such.

I'm frim on the thought 20+ on trail 18 and under for race tracks. JMO

well a little update. i checked on my powervalves and they are sticking open. i manually closed them but there is some binding. so as soon as i get my new top end gaskets the motor is coming out, and i will have to get them operational. then i'll be able to see how the low end is with the valves operating properly and the jetting right. i might be able to drop one tooth on the front sprocket and see if that helps too.

IMO 18"s will give you the best handling, but 20"'s are a better all around tire. Good handling, and decent clearence.
