View Full Version : Sandpuppi's 4th Annual Ride ( Rose City ,MI) !!

Wow,August is almost already here again ,and with that come's my 4th annual ride which will once again be taking place in Rose city ,Mi this year from Friday August 15th to Sunday the 17th.All member's are welcome as long as they can follow my rule's ,and you love to ride ,(3-Wheeler's are a bonus),LOL.Anyway's all are welcome,as long as you can tolerate some of the most beautiful scenery and wildlife ,not too mention trail's you've ever seen.
This year will be a Tad different than last year, and I am gonna need some info from everyone who plan's on attending's thought's.This year I am thinking of scratching the Poker-Run ,and hitting the trail's hard.Running North a bit to the Bull Gap Trail system, and having a cookout at Bull Gap riding area, afterward's we can continue back too camp..I am guessing the round trip to be in the 60 mile range.I am thinking of posting gas at a selected site ,in the trail system ,via a ORV parking area ,and I also have map's with GPS cord's,,.This is what I am thinking ,I need your thought's??
Sleeping in the cabin will be on a 1st come 1st serve basis, but tent camping will be readily avalible,I am also looking for a headcount.
For you out of state people with question's about riding in Michigan take a look at http://www.offroad-ed.com/mi/handbook for the law's and regulation's that the state require's.For past info on this annual ride check out the Sandpuppi Ride thread's and see what you can expect this year +2 ...
All I ask is that we comply with the simple rule's that will be estabilished, such as a 5mph speed limit on the road,(too keep the neighbor's happy),no horsing around on the main road, and basically ,not making the neighbor's angry.Once you hit the trail's,your on your own..I will be providing map's of area's also.Basically if ya wanna ride instead of talking about it than this ride is for you,if ya wanna talk about how nice your garage queen is ya better be willing to get it dirty or leave it in the garage,
I will be posting up and address or somebody else can help me out with doing a mapquest to the cabin.I'm sure I missed something but ask a question and I"m sure that if I can't answer it ,a previous rider can help out..Also any vouleenteer's ,let me know..But keep these date's open, you won't wanna miss this..Now who's coming ???

I've been waiting for this all year! :w00t: I've booked every Friday off work in Aug. waiting for the date! I should be there in the A.M. on Friday. There might be two in my party, I'll confirm that later.
That sounds like a great idea to have a long ride, that way everybody can enjoy the ride, including yourself! If you need help with anything, let me know

Roger,
I was just thinking about what you said about a gas drop. I have been down M-33 between Mio and Rose City a number of times and have seen many quads and dirt bikes at a gas station/party store along M-33. I don't know how far off of the trail it is but maybe that could work. If I get a chance I will take a drive over that way some day and check it out.

I too have also been eagerly waiting for this ride! :w00t: Hell yeah!
Roger, I can say at least me and my brother will be there, maybe a couple of other friends.
For those of you contemplating this ride, if you can make it, dont second guess it! The Michigan ORV trails are some of the best trails Ive riden on. Its an absolute blast.
Jason and I will HOPEFULLY roll in Friday morn, IF we dont experience flood problems again :)
Cant wait! :)

Ohh--Yeaaaa
Roger, Shannon and myself are in for sure and I'm positive Scott's good to go as well. We will be there before noon on fri and will camp in the trailer again. If the other Canadians (Kintore and Dad,Tapper) want to car pool and split gas we can fit 10 or so machines on the new trailer:w00t:
The out and back ride sounds great with us, the bombie might need a couple fuel stops though:lol: (jk)
Looking forward to it

Man, crusing to Mio sounds great! Love long haul rides. And for anyone going on this type or ride. Make sure your bike is up to the task!!!!!!!! These are very long trails, and we will be in the middle of nowhere for long periods of time. Reliability is key. I've been fired up since last year. Oh and Ross, ill be stayin' close to the Bombi. The tow truck is sweetttttttttt.......... See all of ya there

Now Gunnar will that be a good half way point for getting gas for the 2 stroker's,if we're heading too Bull Gap or should we still plan on spotting gas there also ?? I sure don't want to see any of us riding on fume's or running out on the way.And what's your estimate on getting there .I was told pretty much a whole day's trip..

I remember last year a few of us were right past the cemetary and some kids on a dirtbike were out of gas. I think it was either larry or Eric that drained some out of their ride to help the kids out. About half way back larry or eric (whichever it was) ran out of gas  good times

I would say roughly 70-80 miles, depending how you ride. Hopefully these trails are large and fairly non stop. Miles can be racked up relatively fast. If so, and everyone sort of stays together, this one way trip of 70 or so miles will be no problem. I'll be riding a different machine this year which will only require me to bring one bike. A recently purchased 04 Yamaha WR450F. I rode this bike over 100 miles last Saturday up in Baldwin Michigan on fast fire trails and it works great. Very fast and smooth, and decent on gas. Bike only had 230 miles on it when i bought it 2 weeks ago. Basically brand new! I still love bikes and this works better than my yz250 for loooong hauls like these. Has front and rear lights, and a tripmeter.:naughty: See ya there......:beer

One thing we need to do this year is find out which trails are the sled trails that ORV'S arnt allowed on.
I think we were riding a sled trail last year before i gas all my GO GO Juice away

You may want to plan on a gas stop midway through anyways just to be on the safe side. Going that far it might be handy to have a truck and trailor just in case someone has problems. Although if we all ride hondas it shouldnt be a problem:naughty: (jokes)
My brotherinlaw rode to mio one time on a 200sx (quad) and ended up having to walk the last couple miles for gas. But thats farther than bull gap.
I cant seem to find my map of mio trails so Ill have to go pick one up. But if I can remember right you have to head into bull gap and then take a southern loop to get to the pink store but dont quote me on this.

Found my map. The pink store is just south of the parking area to get into bull gap. Co. road 4328. The orv trail crosses M33 about 3 miles north of the parking area. So gas would be about 30 miles from your cabin to the pink store. I think I figured it generously just by counting the mile sq. sections on the map. Careful though Ive been known to screw things up. It sounds about right though being about 10 miles north of Rose City. Maybe tomorrow Ill take a run up there.

Its Official! Michigan has a new ORV law!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Press release on 4323; signed by the Gov
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Press release from Rep Sheltron. .pdf attached below. Grabbed latest I could find, Should be passed version.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Friends:
House Bill 4323, which provides clear legal authority for counties, townships, cities and villages in northern Michigan to allow ORVs on their road shoulders was signed into law this morning. It is now Public Act 240 of 2008.
Counties, cities and villages may begin the process of adopting their ordinances immediately. Under the new law, counties must provide a 45 day comment period to their country road commissioners and the DNR (if state forest land is in the county). County ordinances won't go into affect until approved by the county board of commissioners following this 45 day period. Cities and villages do not need to provide a comment period and could adopt ordinances for their streets beginning today. Under law, townships may not begin the process of adopting their ordinances until July 17, 2009 unless empowered by the county to do so sooner. A model ordinance will be available through my office or by contacting the Michigan Association of Counties.
Please be aware that the new law removed the old "access route" language previously in law. Consequently, none of the existing ORV ordinances in any northern Michigan county, including the counties in Upper Peninsula are valid. Until new ordinances are adopted, it is not legal to drive an ORV on a road or street anywhere in Michigan.
Another common question about the new law is whether it covers golf carts. While it is possible to drive a golf cart on an ORV trail in the state provided it has an ORV permit, this does not legally make a golf cart an ORV. In order to qualify as an ORV, a golf cart has to capable of cross country travel without benefit of road or trail. While some golf carts have been modified to accomplish this and would likely qualify under the new law, the standard golf cart would not qualify.
I would like to thank all of you who helped in drafting this legislation during the public comment process and for helping lobby for this bill during the past two years. We overcame stiff opposition from the County Road Association of Michigan and various other Lansing special interests and bureaucrats. Many people doubted we would succeed. But today, we have prevailed in making a historic change to ORV law in Michigan.
Enjoy your weekend and start contacting your county commissioners to get an ordinance adopted in your area!
Thanks again,
Joel Sheltrown
State Representative
103rd House District

Anyway's what does this mean : Basically that County Road's can be used as trail way's as long as you do a speedlimit and follow basic rule's.This is a huge step in connecting the whole trail system in Michigan.Thought you's should all see why Michigan trail's are some of the best..Only a few week's away now, everybody getting ready?

well we are still planning on coming up but i dont know what to ride. The kickstart on the sx doesnt work and the battery goes dead every now and then. the 350x's, well they are just well used, and my 85 250r probablly wouldnt be a good choice if we are seriosuly doing a 60+ mile ride. I had a blast riding last year but like ed said, this year reliability is KEY. I have a bunch of "riders" and not cruisers.

Ive got a six pack rack for gas on the R, and a GPS for my pocket.
Another suggestion could be a tool box. Find someone willing (with a rear rack) to strap on a bare necessaty tool box just incase.
Other then that, water!

I hope you don't think I need the first aid kit, If I remember correctly somebody else had a big bruise on their side from a Friday night tour
If I can fit the sx in, I have some tools I carry in the trunk, but I don't have a rack or any place else to carry anything. I think my wife has a first aid kit in the van we can scoop for the ride.

I trying to mount up some el cheapo through over saddle bags on my dirt bike LOL would work for water and a first aid kit if I end up riding it.

But we are bringing the crutches so someone else can have all the attention.
We've got a first aid kit (that I carried even before I broke myself) and will have that with us, but no usable GPS unit, so we'll have to follow those who know where they're going.
We're bringing up Ross's 250rs, the bombie and my new blaster. We'd love to see the ride go at a pace that everyone can enjoy and be able to see the views. Hopefully we'll have time to do some fast riding closer to the cottage during the weekend.
We'll be leaving early Friday Morning, to arrive likely just before lunch, and heading home Sunday mid day.
What's the plan for food Roger? Do you need anything? Consider me the coffee girl again. I'll make sure there is enough for coffee every morning and all the fixings. We'll be stopping in Rose City likely for groceries, let us know if you need us to pick anything up.

Well I am all about us just taking our sweet arse time,I know alot of ya's are coming from long distance's,and would like too see the beautiful scenery and all that good stuff.I'd say we take it mellow on the ride too Bull Gap and just have a nice leisurely ride.We can do the Ambrose Lake route again or just go out and hit it hard before or after..What do ya guy's think??
whats the plans for food on saturday? I may have missed it, as i didnt read this whole thread.
What I've done in year's past is I prepare a huge lunch around mid-day on Saturday ,after a bit of riding ,have the raffle ,relax and do some more riding afterward's.This year is a tad different,I'm thinking since we're spotting a vehichle at Bull Gap with gas and what not for us that I'll just throw my grill in there also and we have lunch at Bull Gap before our return trip back to the cabin.I'm still planning on the raffle but we can do that at our leisure .Sound good ??I'm personally just gonna take care of the lunch on Sat.afternoon,so your other meal's are gonna be on you's.There's a store in Rose City where you can pick up all your supplies.
Another thing I was checking out was some vid's on You Tube on Bull Gap,something you's mite find interesting.I used too go up there in the early 90's and drag my tweaked 250R,but it look's like erosion has been pulling most of the sand to the bottom.I'm sure the vid's don't do it any justice either, but something to check out.

Hey man, I hope you can find a way to make it.
If you cant, Ill be driving within 40 miles of you late night Thursday if you need help with the SX.
Good luck, and hope you can swing it.

Hey Roger, you are planning on riding with us aren't you? I would rather have a snack at the pink store that was mentioned before so everybody can enjoy the ride! Last year when we went to the lake (at record setting speeds) was the first time that I rode with you! I know there is alot of planning to do, but personally, riding comes first, food we can eat later after the ride. It would be alot easier to prepair something at the house.
I will also have a small first aid kit and a rope with the sx and there still is only one in my party :( But if I conscider being in the Canadian party there is Four :)
Hey Ross, I guess Shannon did read the post  I was going to say something last Sunday at the ride, but I didn't want to put you in the dog house.

John that cooker look's sweeeeet and is a very gracious gift,Thank You . Someone is gonna be the lucky winner of that cooker.I am guessing we will have the raffle and what not when we get back from the Big ride Saturday. And since were talking donation's,those will be gladly accepted when we get up there. There is no charge for staying there ,but I alway's give Bob ,the owner of the cabin as much as I can for using the place and give our buddy Glen, who live up there a few dollar's to clean up the road after we depart.Plus last year's proceed's have gone into having this year's ride..

Well I have been checking on weather update's on our weekend forecast and it's looking like it's gonna be in the upper 70's to lower 80's for high's this weekend with NO-Rain...{knock on wood!!)
Everything is pretty much falling in line ,and hopefully staying that way.I am kinda thinking that maybe some of us should bring tent's,the cabin is 1st come ,1st serve ,but it's looking like it's gonna be a bigger than expected gathering, which is Great ,but I don't wanna feel bad when all the room is gone,so if your planning on getting there late Fri, or Sat. morn,it's something to think about.
I went out and got some 2 way radio's for the big ride ,or however we'll need them.I am also going to be getting info.,on the local hospital's ,and I also checking into other thing's.{Just in case..}
Eric ,that would be cool if you could make a dune trip along with the ride,I know it's a bit of a drive for ya,from the cornbelt .Ed,that'sthe WR model is,nt it..Look's nice, wrong color though,LMAO !! Larry, your rite there. When your around a camera is a must have item,LOL.I'm getting pretty Geeked about this weekend, especially with the optomistic weather outlook.
Does it seem like we're gathering everything we need ,I sure don't wanna forget something.

What an event!
Some good, bad, and ugly. A couple lessons learned, but all-in-all it was amazing. A lot of work by a lot of folks to pull it off and keep everyone rolling (and not bleeding ;D )
OMG, the dust was like nothing I've ever riden in before. It was all but impossible to see your own front tire sometimes. I'm afraid to go look at my air filter.
Special recognition to Itrike for sacrificing his ride to make sure we all got home. I know that part wasn't as fun for him. I hope we made up for it a bit with all the other riding we did on the local trails.

Looks like it was a blast! Next year I hope to show up and meet some of you guys and gals. Looking to head up toward Gaylord and do some riding up that way before it gets too cold. I shall see how that pans out. It's a six hour drive for me and I need to find a a trailer to haul my rides on. Might try sometime in September. Thanks for all the pictures and videos!

John I have too agree with you on the dust.I did'nt see the dust as being an issue at all :) ,heck the only time I even got a little bit dirty was when I hit a few puddle's in the trail.
I did'nt take a whole lot of pic's but I'm in the process of loading them up and should have them up here in a few.I think next year I am gonna have too get a committee together or something ,it's alot of work to get everything organized ,and I think it would take a little preassure off me personally.I am very appreciative for everybody who helped out and steped to the plate to make the weekend the success that it was. From Shannon with the coffee ,the Swinehart crew with the paper product's,Bill with the grilling,I-trike and Gag for the use of truck and trailer,Jason and Derrick with the inspiring conversation,Jimmy for the jeep entertainnment, and everyone else that even made donations for the raffle, there's so many people to thank on my part,I just can't say Thank You enough..I also would like to thank everybody for the cash donation's,the donation's go to next year's ride and to Bob ,the owner of the cabin,I talked too our buddy Glen,(the neighbor on the quad),and he said the neighbor's had no issue's with our group at all.I'm just the one who got us together ,everybody else made the trip a success ,my hat goes off to all of you.

Roger... (I have my own login now so I don't have to hijack Ross's any more..) count me in on your committee next year. Apparently I do that kind of thing well (Ross volunteers me on a regular basis!). John no worries on the face masks, between what Jimmy brought and what I had, we still had some left over for the next day.

Well her's pretty much what I have as far as pic's from the weekend.Too bad I could'nt have taken a few when I was riding in the front of the pack.Yeah Shean, you and Ed were riding real hard behind me pretty much all day and the 2 mile straight away was the best.It was the 1st time I had the 600X pegged and it was an awesome feeling.I know one thing for sure ,when I got the 600 up to where it did'nt have a load,I was friggen flying. And running in the trails with Jason Hall was the ultimate,Jason I know you coulda took me in a few spot's ,but that was some of the best hardcore ,fast riding I did all weekend.I knew that sound coming up on me was'nt a Yamaha, but we were ripping so fast and I was soo loose ,all I could do was get a glimpse or 2 and all I saw was white, rite on my rear.Buddy that was a blast, and you'r new trike is awesome..

Here's a few more : Here's the cooker that Swinehart donated ,(that we donated back to Bob,the owner of the cabin). I put it rite in the middle of the kitchen and wrote him a note on the plate, saying thank's from myself ,Jimmy and all the rider's.Thank's again John:beer ..I'm sure he'll be suprised and appreciative ,and I'm sure we're invited again..I also have a couple pic's of the Big Red that I picked up from Gunnar up there..LOL,he did'nt make it too far with-out selling that thing.Notice the rear fender's,basically indestuctable,LOL. The wife say's she doe'nt like this one,I don't know why ??

Feel really bad for the ohio guys. They were put through hell this weekend. This was a flat one of them had, he had to ride on it for miles to get to the gas station! (obviously) Id have gone crazy to have to ride through those trails with a flat for as long as this guy did.

Did anyone take a pic of them sweet bars that were on my bike friday. When Ed, Jeff and I went to Yamaha to get a new pair. That eased the pain of having to buy a new set.
