View Full Version : eBay starters? ATC250ES
The starter on my atc 250es crapped out today. I had it in water on Sunday and when I went to start it today the solinoid clicked but it wouldn't turn over. I tapped the case of the starter with a hammer and I got a few growls out of it, but nothing more. I dissasembled it and a lot of graphite came out of the case. Put it back together and it does nothing now. Progress.
Anyway, I am looking at starters (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-HONDA-ATV-STARTER-MOTOR-ATC-TRX-250-ATC250-TRX250_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43976QQihZ023QQi temZ360063429602QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) on eBay. They are about $50 plus $40 or so shipping to Canada. Any good? Any other ideas? It is a Mitsuba SM-8.

Thats not a bad price, though I have no idea on the shipping.
The only other option is to rebuild what you have. They sell a bushing replacement kit on ebay for like $30 or so. Given the choice of spending 20 more for a new one...I'd go new.

Don't forget, if buying a replacement starter there are 2 types. The barrels are similar but the gearshaft is different.

seeing that they can be different, i'd opt to rebuild my old one.

I am not 100% sure, but I think that both types will work interchangeably.
As stated the difference is that one shaft is longer than the other (the gears are in the same place, just one has about 1/4" more shaft on the end of it.)
I have both types at home and will check it out tonight for you so you can be sure, but i can swear I've swapped em in and out without an issue.

The 87 big red 250es uses the longer shaft starter. The 86 uses the shorter.

I just checked what I had and I now say they are not quite interchangeable.
After looking at my 1985 250sx it seems the longer shaft model is going to be too long. But I have a trx300 that uses the long shaft and it appears to work just fine with the shorter shaft.
