250R - when tilting up, can tranny oil leak into air boot

I was working on my new 250R last night and tilted it up (standing on end) and then after 5 mins I noticed about a tea spoons of what looked like tranny oil was leaking out of my air box. I took the air filter off and noticed oil in my air intake boot. Is this tranny oil do you think? How can it get into my air intake? The bike runs good. Seems very strange.

Is there anyway for case oil or any type of oil to flow back into the air boot and air box when tilted up?

Could this be just air filter oil in the tube and the bike has never been tilted up till now and it drains out?

it is pretty normal, Tranny oil can work its way up into the top end and of course right into the intake when it is up like that. The only time i would worry is if the 250r was constantly smoking badly, then you might have a blown crank seal causing the oil to get into the motor.

I hope its pretty normal. I searhed the forum for anything about oil lekaing into intake and nothing came up. The trike runs flawless and smooth with no excessive smoke so I hope it was just a non-issue event of tilting up my trike.

The only time i would worry is if the 250r was constantly smoking badly, then you might have a blown crank seal causing the oil to get into the motor.If tranny oil is working it's way into your crankcase or topend, then something is wrong, like a bad crank seal, or a leaking centercase gasket. Most likely, the oil that you're noticing is just premix that has separated from the gas.

I would say (hope) it's either pre-mix or air filter oil.

I guess it was just a fluke. Last night I changed the gear oil and made sure it was the correct amount. Then tilted the trike up and let it sit all evening. Not a drop of oil leaked back into the air box. I must have had a combination of air filter and pre mix oil in there and I was the first person to tip this thing up in years. She runs great and the air box is clean, so I'm running it.

Red Rider is correct. If trans fluid is entering crankcase at all, you've got problems. But as he said, more than likely is is normal separation of gas and oil which leads to a certain amount of residual oil in bottom of crankcases. :cool:
