Been trying to fix this problem for over 2 years. gave up on it about a year ago.

story:

Took the ATC to a local shop to get the top end rebuilt, it took them months and months to do, i finally got it back and it had a very loud annoying constant ticking noise. I didn't care to have them fix it, i just wanted my ATC back. Shop went out of business a month later.

So, I let it sit for awhile then tried to start it, was leaking gas and in need of a carb rebuild. Gave the carb cleaning a shot....didnt work. Doesn't get gas at all. If you spray some starter fluid in there it'll run until the fluid runs out, then die.

I recently purchased a carb rebuild kit, and I'm going to attempt this again today, and see if i can get it running again.

problem is, i still have that ticking problem which many have guessed to be ba a valve in need of adjustment.

So.... how do I adjust the valve?

and could a bad valve be the ticking problem?

i suppose i need feeler gages? where do I get those?

A person of my expertise should probably be paying a shop to have this done, problem with that is NO shop around here will even touch an ATC.

I have been looking for over a year.

theres a large off-road shop that will do it, they want $100 for the estimate, and $150 an hour labor. and estimated me at 4 hours for the valve adjust, and 3 for the carb rebuild. + parts

I'm not looking to spend $1,100+ on a valve adjust and a carb rebuild.
I could buy a much much much nicer bike for that much money.

It couldnt take you over a half hour to adjust the valves. Its really not too hard. If I were you I would buy a manual. Feeler gauges should be avail at any car parts store.

Theres a nice write up on adjusting your valves, real simple, just a quick Q, dose the noise go again if you rev it up..?

200x valves get adjusted at 0.003 inch if i remember correctly. mine still made noise so i went to 0.002 inches. go with 0.003 inches first.

Fixed the carb, the main jet was cloged

the old main jet said *115

the new jet said *110 on it

and the pin hole opening was slightly smaller. this going to be a problem?

Also, I have a manual

You are correct, or so says the manual

No, click/tick matches the rpms.

you rem it up, click gets louder and faster, slow it down, tick gets slower and quieter.

you cant really hear it here, but maybe:

it might cause it to run lean. i might have a 115 here somewhere. if i do you can send me your mailing info and ill save ya a few bucks and give it to you.

but yea you might be able to make up the difference in the air/fuel mixture screw and needle.

That would be grrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaatttttttt! (tony the tiger)

Is it a big difference? I mean, you kick it once and it starts right up, its never done that before.

Although.... They did make the cylinder a tad bigger due to the rebuild... maybe I should get the 115.

Im soaking mine in carb cleaner right now, maybe I can unclog it

adjusted the valves. ticking got much !much! quieter. however, its still there. this normal?

I fired up my friends ATC and it has a slight tick to it too, which leads me to posting this.

is there supposed to be NO tick?

also, at half throttle it sputters a bit. that normal? or could a smaller main jet cause this?

i always run my valves just abit tighter than spec. so they dont tick.

So you have no tick at all?

And will running them with tick cause damage? running them too tight cause damage?

yea my valves tick a bit too. all my honda 200cc and 158cc motors have. i think its just something that honda motors do ? yea you could go a tad bit tighter but if you have a higher compression piston you wont want to set the valves too tight or you may have some piston to valve slapping going on. you dont need that lmao.

im going to look for the 115 main jet first thing after work tomorrow.
