will the pull start assembly from and 85 atc 200M work on an 82 atc 185? Some similarities, but still different. I am waiting for one that I got on ebay, and now I am doubting my purchase.

I went and checked, I have a extra 200S and 200M recoil, they are the same. Like Nick said, should bolt right on.

It should bolt on with no problems.

The bolt patterns appear the same. The M recoil is not as thick, and has a different pulley and parts inside. That's why I thought they wouldn't interchange, they look quite a bit different.
If I get a chance this evening, I'll bolt it on my 185S.

Just for futre reference, the following machines all have interchangable pull starters:
ATC185
ATC185S
ATC200
ATC200S
ATC200E
ATC200ES
ATC200M
The only difference is the cage that the starter prongs catch onto on the 200E/200M has a smaller profile because of the electric start.

I just got the 200m recoil unit in the mail...... it will not "bolt on" alot of of different things to change on the 185.

That's what I was afraid of. I did not get a chance to try it, but the more I thought about it, they just look too different. The side cases are different.
Maybe you can find another one fast. I have an extra 200s recoil, but plan to rebuild it for a spare for my 185S.
Good luck.

I'm trying to put a 200m pull start on a 200s engine, if I get a 200s pull cage can I bolt up the 200m starter assembly to that? I bought a 200s motor to replace a 200m but it didn't come with any starter gear, so I'm looking to swap out some 200m parts! Any one try fitting this combo before?? Any help much appreciated!!
