hey guys i gotta get this motor back together tonight but im not 100% sure what all i replace around the mechanical seal. i got a new oil seal, mechanical seal, gaskets and a couple washers. Billy said something about a steel sleeve in the case that comes out?? this is where i get lost. i dont know of a steel sleeve in there but if there is one, should it be replaced? also is there any other info or tricks i should know about this mechanical seal before i start putting it back together?

Its not really a steel sleeve, its like a thin sheet metal type deal that is actually part of the mechanical seal, but it normally does not come out when you remove the old one and has to be taken out separately. If you can get a pic I can show ya what I mean.

hey billy i just really checked it out and i understand what your talking about now. it looked as if there was a steel sleeve/collar inside the case that was not part of the seal. i got it all figured out now i just gotta put it all in and hope i dont brake anything.

Kevin, be very careful when pressing the steel sleeve back in. The two piece ceramic-carbon mechanical seal are very fragile. It's best to use a press and a pipe that ONLY contacts the sleeve when pressing in the case. If you contact the carbon at all and hit with a hammer, there is a very good chance the carbon will break. And they are kinda pricey. Just a warning to be very careful and go slow, and stay off the carbon and metallic on the inside of metal sleeve. I have a piece of pipe that has the exact i.d. and o.d. to slowly press it in perfect......
