How are the 185s?

whats up. my buddy is lookin to get a trike. so we can have 2 to mess around on. There is a guy selling a honda 185s around us.

are they any good? i have a ytm225dx. we would want something very close to that.

cant seem to find anything good. there are a few 250r's around here but i think thats too much for what we are looking to do with them.

i would like to get the 200 but cant seem to find any of them either.

The first trike I ever bought was a '85 225 DX . Smoked like a fiend but it was a really fun comfortable machine. I now have a '83 185s and my kids '85125m. My 185s is fast and the front shocks are nice but given my size 6' 2'' 230lbs. it is a little cramped for my legs. It is a fun trike but if you are looking for something in comparison to the dx, I think its apples to oranges. Both are fun but I would look for another softail to stay the same. Then you have shaft and chain, Red to Yellow. I would buy one of each if I had the money. If the thing runs and is reasonable try it out. My wife always wants me to get another one. ERRRRR... not. sorry i should have been a little more clear. we like the fact of the chain driven. id rather go that way.

i meant like performance wise. we have our dirt bikes also which are yz450f and crf450r.

so can the 185s stay with the 225dx? we like to hit woops with these and climb hills. wheelies and 2 wheelin. *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* like that. nothing really like full flat out drag type of stuff.

the ytm225 climbs awesome. and has alot of torque. so we want something like that for the second one.

I think the 185 will be fine with the torque and power. Seems like my dx picked up a little quicker, but both moved pretty good.

i have heard quite a few times that the 185 actually has a little more top speed than the 200's. If it fits your buddy size wise, I think it would be great for what your looking for.

the 185s has a better power to weight ratio than the 200 because its a smaller chassis. the 200 engine is just a 185 bored over and has a very little difference in power.
the power will be very close in comparison to a dx225

As far as power or quickness, I would bet money that a 185s will beat a 225, 200, 250 sx or BR in a 300ft drag race(I've done it with mine, got trophies to prove it} the power to weight ratio is pretty good on these 185's but as far as whoops and good bumps I would prefer the 225, just because of the rear susp.

Just be careful, a 185S will buck you off when you go off a big jump, and land.

Pretty sure the 185S is a hardtail.
I can't remember if it has solid forks also, but I believe it does.

Is that an '82 in the last post. I have heard alot of people say the 185s doesn't have any suspension but mine is an '83 with front shocks, and hard tail. The specs page says no suspension on 83's but if you go to the brochure site it shows both the 185s and 200 side by side with telescopic forks. I need to go look at the 82 on there. Pretty sure '83 was last year made on the 185.

My first trike 13 years ago was a 185s. I beat the bag off that trike, and it was fun. For casual riding, it will be alright, but my 250SX is a lot more comfortable. If you can find something with a suspension, you'll be happier. You can learn to ride with no suspension, it just takes more work on your end. For a long ride, it will wear you out quicker. I only paid $150 for mine, and it was a tank. I had to rebuild the top end, but it was a fun time. It was a great trike to learn 3 wheels on. Of course, in the first minute I rode it, I turned, put my foot down in panic, and the tire bit my leg. Do that a few times, and you learn how to lean. By the way, I've had 3 YTM225 trikes, and they were fun, just not as reliable as my Hondas.

The '83 185s has front forks. I have one.
If you want more performance, it's really easy to do. As stated the only difference between a 185 and a 200 is the bore. Take the cylinder, bore it to the stock 200 size (65mm from 63mm) install a stock 200x piston. The 200x piston bumps the compression from 8:1 to 9.6 to one. That will increase power and if you port the head a little, it makes a huge performance difference.
We have a bone stock 1984 200s and the 185s with the 200x piston with a ported head. I would estimate a 25% power increase with the 185s. Totals cost for that upgrade, about a $100 including a valve job.

My 82 185s has no suspension. I picked up mine for $50.00. It needs a carb rebuild.

Yeah, 83's have front suspension. I'm surprised with the power mine has, I had a 200S and my 185S would beat it easily in drag racing. Mine was a freebie, got about $60 in it to get it going, needed coil and a carb rebuild, no brakes so I put front shoes and a cable on it, the rear drum is seized on. It is my favorite now, mainly because I have no $ in it.

I have a 185s that I got for free, Its a nice little machine. Just dont expect to haul through whoops.
I also have a 185s Frame with a 200s Motor in it. Its faster than my 185 because of the tooth difference in the rear sproket. 185 has a 43(stock for a 200s I belive,Swaped in that axle because the other was toast.) and the 200 has a 41(stock for a 185).
