i posted another thread asking if i should have new seats cut because the motor i got was pretty old. anyway i decided to just buy new valves and lap them in. i used a drill with a hose on the end of the valve and lapped away for quite a few minutes. i cleaned off the compound and checked the valve. the surface area that ground down was pretty large. i just watched a youtube video where a guy did it by hand, and only for a few seconds each. i read about some people using a drill and thought i'd give it a go.

i'll try and post pics, but what is the worst case scenario? it seats REALLY good? i mean the ground part didn't go all the way to the tip of the seat on the valve, there was still some shiny area left near the edge but not too much.

Unfortunately the drill and a hose trick doesnt get a good grind on a old seat. The seats and valves become out of round and no longer true and square after years of use. You end up with a high side in the seat. When you lap them in with the drill it just rubs the high mark on the valve creating the appearance of a good seal. If you lap it by hand back and forth it works the highspot into a specific part of the valve inturn getting more contact with the bad seat.

you over did it for sure. i only go both directions for a few seconds tops, then check to see whats going on.

if you go slow you can see the high spots (if there are any) but i have done this for years and never had a valve not seal.

you just look for the seat and the valve to both have a contact area thats flat

Sounds like you went too much bud....

The OEM manual shows the angles that need to be achieved in pretty good form.

frigg'n A. this is a 25 year old honda, i'm not buying another valve. i'm going to put it together and i'm sure it'll run fine. new bore, new piston, new valves....and it's a honda. it'll be alright!

Toss the valves and springs back in the head, set it upside down and fill the combustion chamber with water. If the water leaks through into the intake or exhaust passage that valve isnt seating properly. No seepage = no worries.
